3D Challenge #022 - Water tower
Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.
This week's challenge:
Water tower
For this week we have another building type challenge, the water tower. A water tower is nothing more than a building or a construction to keep a very large tank of water at a height sufficient enough to pressurize a water supply system. Althought these buildings still exist around the world, most of them are disconnected from the water supply system and replaced by pumps. These days they often fulfil different uses like an observation tower, houses, restaurants, telecommunication tower or other commercial use. Jump in and start creating your version of this monument of civil enginering.
Good luck ALL!

Thought I'd get in first this time with a NZ built, Invercargil Watertower
ReplyDeleteHere's a low poly water tower (37kb) I did about 2 months ago as a component for others to use in their models. The photo it was based on can be seen here. Not exactly the high poly, smoothest surface and loaded with details that everyone's going for but I've been trying to model for GoogleEarth about a year now and trying to keep file sizes to a bare minimum. I might go back and rework a new one out of it or start with something brand new. Hope you like.

ReplyDeleteHere is another collection of interesting water tower designs. Various pages on this website if you click through the different years located at the bottom of the page.

ReplyDeleteThis is my Watertower. I constructed all of it from design to 3d.
This time I had not much time for this challenge, so I prepared another Diorama with a lot of components to reduce modelling time and basic texture.

ReplyDeleteThis is the old drinking water tank of Santa Engracia Madrid.
It was the first elevated water tank in Madrid. In 1911 was on duty, an out of duty in 1952.
Nowadays the building is used for the General Canal Isabel II Archive.
The Building has a dome roof covered with zinc plates and brick erected

ReplyDeleteSorry but you can't use a model already made, yours is date 07 October 07.. You have to create a new one during the week of the challenge, without using any other prefab elements.
Anyway great google Earth model.
Hello José Manuel
ReplyDeleteA nice looking model, But do remember that textures are turned off during judging of a model. The model is perfect for Google earth, but the challenge is focused on the use of SketchUp to develop 3D geometry to exibit the challenge topic.
Also, as COSEDIMARCO noted, the model must be made for the challenge and this was created prior to the challenge start.

@jw_n_mo Josh Wilson
Your model was also created prior to the chalenge start (11/10/07) and can't be included as a new model for the challenge. Hope you both decide to enter another model.

from ground to tap, a lot goes on everytime you grab a glass of water.
drink up.
Thought I'd make another one, I thought I'd practice doing little tricks with textures, and making a tree stump. I'm quite pleased at how it turned out.

ReplyDeleteThats my entry.
Hey everybody !
ReplyDeleteI'm new here so please be nice to me!
I just installed Sketchup and when I discovered this challenge, I thought it would be a good thing to learn about the software.
So here is my Big Drop project.
The main structure is in wood (except for the bricks on the side of the access road). The water is stored in the kind of big blue drop. Since water doesn't like light, the tank couldn't be glass but hey ! It's a model so let's have fun : it's glass !
I was thinking of placing this "natural mountain" in the middle of a park but we'll see this later...
Even if it doesn't seem to be tall, it is. Check the size of people and you'll see : it's big, it's Big Drop !
Hope you'll like it ! See ya !
PS: Sorry for my english !

WHAT A GREAT IDEA FOR A DESIGN CHALLENGE, I THINK IT WILL WORK WELL BECAUSE IT WILL LET PEOPLE SHOW THEIR CREATIVE SIDE. I AM INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT PEOPLE CAN COME UP WITH, I KNOW I ALREADY HAVE SOME GOOD IDEAS.
ReplyDeleteHere's my marble water tower, simple but modern. Hope you like it.

ReplyDeleteA leaning watertower off of Route 66. Google earth ready
This model is a combination of complex modelling and very exact textures. The tower itself realy exists and stands in Sneek.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun again to make a real model instead of
all those flat models with fototextures I made. However this means that this model is larger than 8mb, something what I would never do normally.

Wow, Great models all!
ReplyDeleteI'm quite impressed! Keep them coming.

It would appear that people are able to vote if they are not signed in. I noticed this on the votes for next model; I'm assuming that it would be the same on the voting for the models. If that is the case, people would be able to enter the site and vote many times on their own model, therefore winning the challenge.
ReplyDeleteIf I am not correct in my assumption, then great, otherwise, is it rectifiable?
From one computer you can vote one time, twice if you open the page with Firefox and IE. I think the blog poll use a cookie to trace your IP or something similar.
ReplyDeleteIf you have many others computers, psp or other hardware which use differents IP you can re-enter your vote.
I presume people are honest and vote only one times. Sigh! what an illusion :-)
I think there's no solution with this polling system.
Here is my model

I think the only way to keep the voting "honest" would be to vote by leaving a comment on the blog. This would mean that you can only vote once and you must have a google acct. and they don't count anonymous votes.
ReplyDeleteBUT...this would be a pain, people would figure out how to create multiple accounts, mods would have to carefully check each voter, people would accidently type in the wrong model name, there would be no privacy in your voting, it would cause war and famine, and all hell would break loose, ape's would take over the world and blow up the statue of liberty and......
I say leave it, but if the poll can leave out "anonymous" votes than that may help.
