3D Challenge #024 - Floor lamp
Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.
This week's challenge:
Floor lamp
This week's challenge is an indispensable piece of furniture for every living-room, the floor lamp. It's main purpose is of course to illuminate a space, but it can do that in many different ways. The floor lamp can be used as an accent light, a reading light or to create a specific atmosphere in the room. These differences are determined by the used lights and the overall design of the lamp. The design also determines if it's just a functional piece of furniture or an object of art in the living-room. For this challenge, the only rule is that the lamp must be placed on the ground, as we are creating a floor lamp. With a rather small object this challenge, there's lots of time to spend on the small details of your lamp.
Good luck ALL!

ReplyDeleteHeyyyy, let's compete! Here's my entry; http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=2c33945f14dd08427bf7115af47e66c7
ReplyDeleteI was inspired by the connection between light and life...
It evolved to this!
Not sure if this is the right place, but I didn't see anyplace else.
ReplyDeleteI've read the "manual" and "common mistakes" PDFs, but I'm not sure about a couple of things.
1) Who or what judges the entries. Is it the votes with the radio buttons to the right? Or is there somebody else out there making a decision?
2) I read in the blog that the models are judged without textures Does that mean without "materials", without "watermarks" or with colors but without using graphics as materials or what?
3) If graphics as materials or watermarks are allowed, are we allowed to use the standard ones which come with SU, or can we create our own, or can we use art created by others?
4) What'cha get if you win? A good feeling is great, but is there more to this?
Thanks,
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=67346d062795bd4b86dcab7348bdc81
ReplyDeleteThe less expensive floor lamp I can imagine. I wish it could partecipate to this challenge.
ReplyDeleteWork is still in progress.

Something I threw together. Crazy Lamp
ReplyDeleteCan I just say that I'm very dissapointed...
ReplyDeleteI really wanted to model a tank!! Only 5 more votes and we'd be modeling unstoppable war machines.
But I suppose a cheap ikea floor lamp is just as fun.
:)
Also, I noticed that over 130 people voted. 50+ for just the floor lamp. Wouldn't you expect at least 50 submissions then? Just a thought... Wondering who all these people are that vote but dont join in on the fun.
here's 2 floor lamps from my home.

@SchreiberBike: Sorry for the rather late response, but I'll try to answer your questions.
ReplyDelete1) It's the community who judges the entries. In the very beginning on the old forum it was judged by a "jury" but it was to time consumming this way. From that point, we decided to make the judging by the community. Indeed with the voting poll on the front page.
2) You are allowed to use whatever materials or images you like, but the geometry of your model is what these challenges are about. That's why we want everybody to judge without textures. You should view a model in monochrome mode (view => face style => monochrome) with only the 2 basic colors from sketchup.
3) As said before, all textures or materials are allowed, unless the main challenge post says otherwise. This includes the standard SU materials or imported materials. Remember that imported images highly influence the model file size if not done properly.
4) Currently there is no price besides a bit of world wide fame. In the beginning we had a pair of Sketchup socks as price, but there were to many problems getting the price to the winners as they had to be send worldwide.
@Chris Bence: I can imagine that you are dissapointed as I sometimes also wanted a different subject for the challenge (allthough I control them for a part), but we do stick to the poll result as much as possible. We only try to direct it a bit by the options you can choose from, to vary enough in the type of subjects. Besides, all poll results are stored and the subjects of old polls might be re-used in the future. Further I would like to say that if you really want to model a tank, what's holding you? These challenges are about learning how to model with sketchup. In my opinion the only way to do this is by lot's and lot's of practise. If you only make cars, weapons, houses or any other category you'll be dealing with the same modeling problems over and over. By differentiating the subject, you will be confronted with new problems and discover many new modeling techniques to create any shape you want. In my opinion this is the best way to learn how to model...

Torchiere Lamp
ReplyDeleteThought this was a cool classical lamp. Plus it was fun to play with the rendering. The render was done in Kerkythea using point lights within the lamp and translucent materials for the shade and globe.

Almost forgot, the painting in the render is not mine and should not be considered part of the model. I got it from the warehouse, and just added it to the render for some ambiance.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteThis is my entry for the SketchUp 3d Floor lamp Challenge! The floorlamp is built out of ordinary lightbulbs, all this in the shape of one large lightbulb. The dimensions are accurate, the standard man is included to show this.
Here's my link:

Unfortunately i saw the reminder to post the link here too late....
I made some minor changes to the Slot Cutting Jig for my Frank Lloyd Wright Lamp which shows how to do a part of the construction of the lamp. Hope that doesn't knock me out of the contest, but I didn't want an error to stand in the model.

ReplyDeletethis is my entry.
Why didn't my model, entitled beehive lamp, appear in the voting section, but it appears in the model collection. If anyone is reading this blog, then please tell me. My model took a while, and I would like for it to have a chance to be voted on. Thanks
ReplyDeleteCan someone tell me why 60 people voted for the new challenge, and only 38 people rated our models?
ReplyDelete@pattypackrat: Your model probably was not taken into the voting poll because of an incomplete submission before the deadline. For a submission you have to put your model on the warehouse with the proper tag (you did that right as far as I can see) AND you have to put a link to your model on the blog. You did post a link (next time please use a hyperlink), but 3 days after the challenge closed instead of before the deadline. These polls are created shortly after the challenge close. Once somebody voted in the poll, they can't be changed anymore (so nobody can be added) because of software limitations from the blog.
ReplyDelete@DesignsbyALX: There are several reasons why there are less votes. First, it's an open blog where nobody is forced to vote. Secondly, the poll is not closed for a few days, so any conclusions are a bit premature.
