3D Challenge #007 - Fountain pen

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

Fountain pen

One of the first fountain pens with a reservoir was created in Egypt around 953. It took until the 18th century before the fountain pen got developed more and more. From about 1850 many new patents were requested and mass-production started in 1880. Currently the fountain pen has reached a more exclusive or historic status, as it is passed by ballpoints and computer technology. This weeks challenge is to create an existing or imaginary fountain pen. As usual you're free to choose whatever kind of fountain pen you prefer, like fountain pens for sketching, a cheap mass-production fountain pen or a highly exclusive fountain pen for example. Well known brands for inspiration are: Waterman, Montblanc, Parker, Pelikan, Rotring, Sheaffer and many others.

Jump in and start modeling!

  2. J-m@n, Can I make a suggestion? I think it would be a good idea to have a link in the blog post for each challenge linking to the "3D Challenge 007" tagged models in the warehouse. That way people view all the models easily.

    Just a thought.

  3. Hello andrew,

That seems to be a good idea, I'll see what I can do with it. It would require everybody to use the exact tag though, as the warehouse is case sensitive. Thanks for the suggestion, we are always open for ideas.

  6. Howdy everyone, Well I got carried away again. There are several problems with this model. So I'm entering the model but not for competition. I was playing with composition and theme. I still like all suggestions and comments. I'll be on the road for a while. Might enter from my laptop.

  7. well, as I was trying to create a freeform design, I made this crazy pen. Ergonomically Incorrect, but I thought it was cool.

    here's your "unofficial" prizes.

let me know if you don't want these published and I will pull them.

As for the future. I can render the winners model as an unofficial prize, if you all don't mind. I am still learning so they may not be great, but I enjoy it.

  10. Tom, great renders, man! I've seen all the renders in your album and, if indeed you're new at it, you seem to improve your skills by the minute. I'd love to see some of my own models rendered in such grand fashion. Please feel free to use any of them if you feel so incined, even if I chose not to enter them as official submissions. I must admit that it massages one's ego to see one's work made better by others. ;)

  11. I don't mind you having the renders up there. They look awesome!! I keep trying to find the time to learn rendering, but I can't seem to drag myself away from modeling!

I think it's a great idea to have a rendered image as a first prize "bragging right". Since there's no tangible prize, I like getting all the attention I can get! :)

Do you mind if I use your renders in my modeling portfolio that I'm putting together? Can I credit you as "Cartographer_Tom" or is there another name you would want to appear in a credit?

    ReplyDelete
  12. thanks, Oscar and Andrew. And yes you can use those images, they're your "prizes" hehe. As for credit Cartographer_Tom is fine, I may change my "artist" identity someday, but not too soon. I seem to be doing more rendering than modeling lately, but I can't give up either of them.

Oscar, maybe I'll sneak out one of your models soon.

  13. Howdy All, The render reward is great. Thanks for my Bonanza render. What render program are you using? I also have a question for anyone who is willing to answer. I was trying to place .jpg file to my rounded pen surfaces. I looked at several tutorials on this subject. After a dozen tries I kept getting the photos broken up to each segment of the rounded 3d surface. The pen designs are really great

  14. Don, This video on YouTube shows you how to wrap an image around a cylinder. It is for a cylinder that is uniform in diameter, so for the fountain pen you may need to modify this procedure a bit.

There also this video which shows how to map a picture to a curved surface. This may work better on the compound curves of the pen. I used this method when I was mapping images onto my Concorde model... because of the complex nature of the curving surface.

    Hope that helps!

  15. Andrew, that was a help. thanks. Transferring an .jpg to a simple cylinder worked. I'm still having some problem on the projected image. I created a model just like the one in the tutorial. Where the two arches meet I get a repeat of the image on the other side of the lime. Is there a way to create a double curve without a line?
    Thanks Don

  16. Don, All the line means is that there is an edge that is not hidden. (ie, smoothed out) The rest of the face has lines on it to (which you can see if you goto View -> Hidden Geometry). If you want the line to disappear then select it and smooth it out (Window -> Soften Edges) It should be gone then.

But... with or without the line, you should be able to have the same image span both surfaces without repeating. The image should cross to different faces without repeating. In the tutorial he gets you to make a second face that is the same projected size as the curved surface you want to map, but flat. Right click on that texture and make sure that the material is projected. It should work.

Let me know if it still does't work, and I can post a simple model illustrating this, for you to play with.

  17. Hey Don, I had a bit of time... I made a quick video showing you how to do it.

    Whatch it here

  23. Hello all,

All of you having good models.

That’s good 3d pen design COSEDIMARCO, good poly details, but to give more realizations on 3d model you can add photo texture or make custom texture in Photoshop & apply to model.

  25. Thanks Rahul Desai for your comments. I decided to partecipate to the challenge only in the last days so this time I had no time to work on texture. I used the SU standards and created only the "EF label" texture.

I tried a rendered version with Kerkythea but the result was worse than the one in SU.
