3D Challenge #041 - Tram

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

Tram

The Tram is a great way to get around a city or non-rural area. The Tram is a rail car or is fixed in someway and travels on a track normally on the streets of a city or town. Some of the most famous trams are located in San Francisco city and run up and down the steep streets transporting passengers where they need to go. Use as much detail as you like and be creative. Most importantly, learn and have fun. That is what these challenges are all about!

Bonne chance!

  1. General notes:

From this challenge and in the future, there will no obligation for a blog entry anymore. It is still allowed to post a link to your model or additional images, but it is not required anymore to submit a model to the challenges. The 3D Warehouse tag is still required though and should be added when uploading a model to the Warehouse.

You can use the hyperlink code creator on the frontpage of the blog to create the code for a hyperlink in your message. Copy this code and paste it in the comment box on the place where your want the hyperlink to be.

Challenge suggestions are welcome to be placed on the blog. Items will be noted and compiled on the moderator’s list. At that point, the initial comment for the suggestion may be deleted so as to maintain a streamline challenge thread for use of posting entries for the challenge and comments to models. Challenge suggestions have always been welcomed and taken under consideration.

    Good luck with the challenge!

  4. noblesse oblige

One must act in a fashion that conformes with one's position, and with the reputation that one has earned.

    Well said COSEDIMARCO!!!

  5. Against my better judgement, I entered into this challenge.

    Why against my better judgement?
Well I have a new computer and wanted to see what it was capable of.

    Why the judgement?
Because as I have said before, I disapprove of the (dis)honesty voting system.

However, considering that I am making models to enter into the challenge to further improve my skills and in an attempt to illustrate to those newer members of what can be attained with a little time a patience, I will continue entering into these challenges regardless of the voting system.

If a modeller wins the challenge with a substandard model, everyone knows that it is due to their dishonesty not creativity.

So... a person who has spent a lot of time creating their model doesn't get their model on the winners collection... so what... at least someone else who has done just as good a model doesn't have to be upset because you won.

That's all I have to say...

    So keep on modelling!!!

  7. The mods team (or at least the better part of it, since I must aknowledge that I personally haven't been able to work as one in a while) has been working hard in order to keep this Challenge running as smoothly as possible.

It has been apparent for quite some time now that the voting system is flawed, and several alternate methods have been tried, alas, without success (and by "success" I mean not achieving to fully please each and every involved party).

My personal concern in all this is that the true spirit of the Challenge seems to have been utterly forgotten. The idea behind the 3d Challenge blog was, and remains, to encourage friendly competition amongst modellers (both skilled as well as amateurs); and to promote colaboration that, eventually, leads to improve "sketchuppin" individual's skills.

I think that figuring out who "wins" or who doesn't "win" a given Challenge falls down to a lesser degree of importance with regard to what's been previously stated, and that to bicker about it all is somewhat petty. That's why I applaud Cosedimarco, Crazy Eyes and A.J. Unknow for their comments. It is their commitment to improve their own skills and help others improve theirs what will, in the end, keep these Challenges going on stronger.

  8. I'm a bit of an amateur, and I know that I probably won't win, but I do these challenges because I need the practice, and I think just using Sketchup is fun! \m/

  9. well i dont understand what you are suggesting. i dont think you can make mean people nice agian by asking politly ( usually that the case ) when i say mean people i "mean" that those people who are voting themselves.

i thing that we must either have 3 judges to vote for the best model there is out there ( for these challenges of course ). either that or we make it so that we have to put in the blog our model cause that really worked befor ( the lazy people never joined. and lazy people make bad models )

oh and 1 last suggestion is to make it so people cant vote themselves and only once ( and you have to make it so you have to log in on the mainpage of the blog. ) sorry to the admins this may be harder than it sounds

once all the problems with voting are fair and fair to say fixed i will begin to make models for these challenges agian

  10. Jumpman, as much as we would like to make the poll so that you must login to vote, the blog software is unable to do so at the moment. We are looking at alternative voting methods and hope to have something soon.
I really encourage you to keep modeling though. I, as much as other people, would still love to see what you and everyone else comes up with for challenge models. They are meant to be had fun with and to learn, not about who wins or loses.

  11. i'm not stopping making models, just not making models for the challenge at the moment. I apreciate the work you and everone else is doing im just saying theres no use in entering if everyone votes themselves.

i model for fun and i enter the challenge to compete with other modelers. not trying to be rude so dont take any offence, it is also very fun with other modelers.

btw is there something we can use like a chat system that google has so i can invite people to talk on a certain date instead of posting?
it would be awsome to talk to some talented people in live time.
( ive never talked to a sketcher that cant draw more than a cube )

    mr.jumpman v.2

perhaps i will make a model just cause i got the idea bogeling in my mind

  12. Hi mr.jumpman v.2

If, as you said "I model for fun", you have to continue entering the Challenges.
The purpose is increase your skills and, at the end, you know if you've made your best in modelling. No matter who wins.

Trying to win the challenge is only a push to do always your best and beyond.

  13. -- Official announcement --

Some members of the moderator team will have to temporary put down their moderator tasks for personal reasons. To keep the challenges running we asked Cosedimarco to join the moderator team because of his excellent work in previous challenges. Cosedimarco had accepted our invitation and will be a moderator of the Sketchup 3D challenges from now on.

The moderator team wishes him all the best to help continue and improve the challenges.

  14. Congratulazioni Marco on your promotion. And about the ongoing discussion about the voting system and the purpose of this challenge.
As stated in it's title this is a challenge, this means that models should be the result of their very best effort.I can understand that people are at various levels and a simple shape could be the best they make at the moment and as you said the purpose is improving. The best solution to cut down on any form of cheating would be to remove any form of voting. Then the question would be; would people still make models for the challenge? What would be the point? A competition motivates people and attracts them to and to do something.
Most see the purpose of the challenge winning, specially because most participants are young. It doesn't matter how noble the moderator team's intentions are, nobility is often stumped by human nature.
What I'm trying to say is..remove any type of voting system and see what happens, if you only care about noble modellers, then only those will remain...and maybe we'll all be better off.

  15. all im saying is to make this a non cheatable ( that i know of at least ) is to make judges. then the judges agree on first-second-third. i really really want judges but we should have a email vote on this right? Anyways im gonna start that train what ever thing now.

good luck at the challenge, hope to see good models

  18. Hello Jumpman

The problem with judges is time. It takes alot of time to go through each and every model. Not all mods have the free time. Also we now have 6 mods (not all able to be active at the present time) in six different countries in six time zones. It is very difficult to get all the votes in and get it posted in a reasonable time. When we did the e-mail (non cheatable)voting, few participated. We would get 5-6 voters out of 25 modelers. It was easy to click the e-mail link and copy/paste from the list and the voter to type his/her name. But few did.

We will see how it goes from here, and the mod team will void any model if it appears to be in question as to the ammount of votes it receives.

  19. PS: to ALL

Remember, the blog is a great place to share ideas about models and make constructive comments about a model. Also a "job well done" comment is nice to get. That IS the reason for the blog to build friends from around the world as we also develope our skills and see where we might improve by a comment from another.

  20. I have a couple of ideas.First i think the 3d challenge should have a forum where people could present their ideas better and have a better sense of belonging to a community and a easier way of communicating publically with the moderator team.Secondly a suggestion for a challenge "3D Challenge Logo"...and maybe the winner have his logo used as the oficial logo( although in that situation it would be hard to keep the voting fair).
Cheers and keep up the good work.

  21. Hi ALL,

First COMPLIMENTI a Cosedimarco, per il tuo nuovo lavoro... sei in gamba!

@ Jumpman, I had the same felling as you, but I keep going... by not posting for the challenge, no one has anything to gain, and don't take me wrong, but I think you approach is not right. You are a good modeler and your unique style was always appreciated. I, personally, would like see you back in challenge.

If you think I can draw more then a cube... my ID is: dalexd1234@yahoo.com

    Regards to all...

  23. yea i think the main reason is my bad skill for real models. i mean really who wants to model a rubber band... or paper clip? i think the challenges need some pazaz ( tell me if im using the word for the right reason... ) i think i would be fine to join once you make something involving my skills like mecha or robots tanks etc. although the cargo ship challenge was good ill just leave it at "im not making models for a paper clip contest" otherwise sure ill make models.

great models for the new challenge w/e it was!

    ReplyDelete
  24. @mr. jumpman V2
"yea i think the main reason is my bad skill for real models"
If you are bad skilled for real model, this is the right place to improve your capabilities.
A paper clip is not only a circle along a path, but a full bunch of details. Try to take a look at the real model and sketchup everything you see. You'll notice that adding details will increase your abilities in modelling.
I've found that simple models are harder than complex.

About mechs: world is not made only of mechs. I like model robots of the '70s 'cause they reminds me my childhood but I like challenge myself with everything looks good around me too.
I think my clothes-peg model is an example.

Try to challenge yourself first doing thing you're not able to, then challenge the others. :). Push yourself always a bit ahead.

So keep going on partecipating to the challenges and you'll increase your skills

    ReplyDelete
  25. This is just a random idea, but is there a way to make the words of the polls hyperlinks to the models? That way, it might be easier for people just to browse through the models, instead of having them look at the entries, because it's a bit hard to look at all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  26. "sketch"

yea just go back one page and click on the think that says-

Click here to see the currently submitted models for this challenge

-and all the models for the recent challenge should show up on a seperate internet page.

    "Cosedimarco"

i shall take your adivice to try and you know... what you just said by making real models.
also i make things like tanks and stuff ( i dont "just" make mechs, i make tanks killer robot suits, guns and things like space planes, pretty much anything sci-fi )
although for a paper clip it is pretty simple but if u want to add detail or be creative that is hard.
ill make a trophy for sure.

  29. Thank you Jumpman v.2!! I don't want to pull anyone's chain I have also used 3DSMAX 2.5 for a few years, off and on. As soon as I figured out SketchUp I was making models that were far better than anything I have made before. I really do love the program, and it is free!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. yea im sure 3dsmax got some stuff sketchup dont. ive been using sketchup for almost 2 years now and you look like youve been here like a year already. very nice model and i hope to see more

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well this is not good at all for me!!! I finally won a contest again after not winning in a longggggggggg time and then I come back after a week in Jordan to find all these posts talking about cheating and models winning that look less attractive than cloudzeros sons fecal matter....

Now no one said my name, but are people suggesting i cheated to win, or are they complaining about past models as well? I'll admit my boat wasn't the best, but judging from all the warehouse comments other people liked it.

Anyway, i agree that the voting system doesn't work out very well. Usually the best textured model wins, regardless of actual model detail...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Never mind, I just read comments from the last challenge and clearly people think I cheated!!

I dont know how to defend myself, so I'm not even going to try. But if you think I cheated now, why wouldn't I have cheated before on all my previous entries?

But I will appologize that I won with an inferior model. I was just as surprised as you guys are!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi Chris
I (and many of the users here I hope) don't think you've cheated.
That was a single user opinion.

The mod team know that voting system has some bugs, and we are tryin' to solve it.

So please keep going with 3D challenge and don't mind with certain "unkind" people :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. chris bence:
I don't think you have cheated

    ReplyDelete
  35. It wasn't about you chris..at one moment wyatt something had the most votes and seemd destined to win with a very unworthy model....You made great models..Don't worry IT WAS NOT ABOUT YOU!!!
    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oops, I misinterpreted your comments! I thought everyone was talking about me the whole time, and I was very disappointed. I love this challenge and all the people in it, and when I thought some of the guys I respect the most were hating on me I was very hurt by it. But I was wrong, my bad!

Thanks guys for being so nice and supportive.

    ReplyDelete
  37. For the record, I was not making my comments on the last lot of votes, nor any in particular. I do not think that I have lost any challeges where I haven't been bettered by others.
Like cosedimarco and Marian alluded to, there are flaws in the voting system and that's not necessarily shown by the winner, but by the votes themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Reading that, it sounded harsh, so I'll end by saying to all those modellers that have taken the time to compete, great work, and your all winners in my book

    ReplyDelete
  39. How about this for a voting scheme:

At the end of each challenge, the moderators add a model (titled "challenge # voting model") to the collection. Everyone can then "rate" that model with the name of the user they think should win.

This system is convenient for us (because we're already in that collection looking at the models), visible for all to see, obvious if someones making multiple user names to cheat (you can click on the name of the voter to see who they previously voted for; if its always the same person, and/or that user has no models or no other comments, somethings fishy...), and theres very little work involved for the moderators... Also, any model more recent than the voting model will not be a valid submission.

What do you think? I think its pretty genius myself ;) hehe

    ReplyDelete
  40. I know the deadline date for the tram challenge is today, but does that mean I have until the end of the day to work on my model? What I am asking is what time zone and at what time is the model due?? Also is that a due date for the initial submission and can I keep updating my model in the warehouse?

    ReplyDelete
  41. @ AnyAirRc
Take a look in the blog's main page how many hours/day are available for the "Previous challenge voting poll". This is also the remaining time for the current challenge (more or less).
A small delay will be accepted.

Before the end of time you should upload the model in the Warehouse (remember to insert the correct challenge tag) and after submission you can't update your model.

    ReplyDelete
  42. COSEDIMARCO, thanks for the info! I have another question but this might not be the right place, What do I type into the interface to make a arc have more segments?

    ReplyDelete
  43. This is exactly the right place to ask and obtain suggestions.
I invite every member of the blog to exchange experiences.

for arcs an circles: selct entity and then use the "entity info" panel to change segment number.

If you haven't yet done, take a look to the "most common mistakes guide" in the main page

    ReplyDelete
  44. i have a really really wanted thing whatever ma-jigy to be added to the next challenge, a tank! tanks are awsome and everyone loves em

    ReplyDelete
  45. I would also like to do a tank after this next chalange (it looks like the trophy will win)

    ReplyDelete
  46. "mr.jumpman v.2"

What I meant was that it might be easier if the poll had links to each individual model, so, for example, if you wanted to check out a model with a lot of votes, you can click on the link and go directly to that particular model
