3D Challenge #057 - Dam

Note: The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.
Before you start modeling and posting, please read carefully the 3D Challenge participating manual and pre-made or downloaded components are not allowed.

This week's challenge:

Dam

As a great engineering marvel and tourist attraction, we will be modeling a Dam for this weeks challenge. One of the most well know is the Hover Dam which is also considered to be one of the man-made wonders of the world. They all have one basic purpose, to hold back and control a LOT of water! When modeling, try to keep in mind some of the other features that Dams have that may not be visible from the exterior such as the turbines. These may be things you wish to include in your model.

As always, have fun and enjoy your modeling time!

  1. General Notes:
There will no obligation for a blog entry anymore. It is still allowed to post a link to your model or additional images, but it is not required anymore to submit a model to the challenges. The 3D Warehouse tag is still required though and should be added when uploading a model to the Warehouse.

You can use the hyperlink code creator on the frontpage of the blog to create the code for a hyperlink in your message. Copy this code and paste it in the comment box on the place where your want the hyperlink to be.

Challenge suggestions are welcome to be placed on the blog. Items will be noted and compiled on the moderator’s list. At that point, the initial comment for the suggestion may be deleted so as to maintain a streamline challenge thread for use of posting entries for the challenge and comments to models. Challenge suggestions have always been welcomed and taken under consideration.

Please refrain from using background images in your models as it is the model itself that is being judged.

You'll notice a new link on the main page that directs you to the First Place Certificate area to which winners are able to print a certificate with a picture of their model detailing their excellence. You can access the page here or through the main page of the blog.

    Have Fun!!!!

  2. Can we import terrain from Google Earth or does this count as content not created by us?

  3. @Jhonny
I think you can, but you have to model the correct dam located in that place and add the 3d detail that are missing in the Gooogle textures (routes, buildings, etc.)

Your models can't be accepted. They were made during last week and uploaded the last day of challenge 56. (10 September)

This challenge started 11 September 2008

OK, I accept your decision. Next time I will wait three or four days to upload my model.
Thanks for your work in the challenge.

I think it's shame to begin a challenge before its stratup...

    Thanks for your cooepration.
Upload timestamp: I'm sorry there could be a mistake with Google database.

The other side of the story is that model must be made during challenge week. The week before you could study model, search for references, etc. but not starting modelling.

I can't control what users do at their homes but everyone should be honest.
    There's nothing important to win.

Mods are studing a way to avoid this problem.
    Stay tuned!

  9. I had a thought, I think it is a good one. Kinda solves a couple of problems at one time, and is easy to incorporate.

What not have the next challenge votes without the counter? Then we can still vote for what we want, but don't know what it is until you let us know when the challenge starts?

    ReplyDelete
  10. We have looked into that idea also, but the poll software does not allow us to do this at the moment.
As Cosedimarco said, we are investigating other ways of of voting.

  11. So Im reading along the forums and I see that you all are trying to fix the voting process

So I invite the good old fashion game of blind mans bluff but with a twist instead of using cards we would have four potential challenges say

    Telephone
    Radio
    Satellite
    Tree

With these four challenges posted then people could do all of the research they need on all the models and then at the end of the week choose one out of a hat
But I know to keep this fair we need to have a voting system still in play so what I device is a poll for most favored model then at then end of the week if the model doesn’t win then it automatically gets put it into the next week challenge kind of like a second chance for victory

But to make it even more fair use models that modelers suggest and to keep it fair choose the next models out of a hat then I do believe that it would be completely fair non byes for anybody

  12. I get a few ideas for next challenges

    - A sink (faucet,..)
    - A fountain .
    - Swimming-pool .

Or other which needs water .
Then, have fun with this challenge !

  13. Well people...this was one heck of a challenge. For me the Dam part, excuse my French was the easy part. Creating a landscape to go with it was a whole 'nother ball-o-wax. One of my tags is called vignette. You'll see. Onward.

    Jinso Dam

check it out I spent a lot more time than usual on this model and I didnt care to put in the terrain because that was not the challenge
so nobody say anything about it

  15. @Cloudedzero.: thanks for the suggestion. I did start by eliminating the entire (pathetic) landscape and I'm left with these "ghosts". Please go to my sight and see. How does one remove whatever those are called. Ghosts? Eraser tool won't work on this. Any help would be appreciated.

I looked at your model and the suggestion I can give you are:
    - First of all start using group an components to better manage your model.
    - Delete unuseful lines.
    - Smooth or hide others.
    - check your model for gaps and missing faces.

When you have deleted the landscape you delete part of the model too. Using group and components will have avoid the problem.

  17. Thanks. I'll eliminate and start over.

  18. @cloudedzero and cosedimarco:
First, you are absolutely right cloudedzero but then I hit a roadblock and cosedimarco was entirely right. As always. My current submission
is shown. A little different in approach. A cutaway with callouts... my first.

  19. @francis_nyc
    Well, Much better! :-)
Follow Cloudedzero comment and then add faces to the ground, use smooth to increase reality.
    Keep going! :)

  21. I didn't think my model would be a contender in the challenge anyway because it wasn't a man-made dam.

  22. By the way, I noticed a couple of times that my model would 'disappear' from the warehouse. Last night, for instance, around 10:45 pm EST in the US, I searched the warehouse and even my own collections and it was completely removed. But then it was back again this morning. What's going on?

  23. @Yipperoo
This is due to WH database maintenance system. After a few hours models will re-appear.

This is a Google Team "fault"
