SketchUp 3D Challenge #163 - 2012 Year in Review

Monday, 31 December 2012 - Thursday, 10 January 2013

Being that this is the last challenge beginning in 2012, it felt appropriate to make it about 2012. A lot can happen in a year: fads come and go, new gadgets hit the market, YouTube creates new "stars", not everything's good, not everything's bad, yet it's ever changing.

In this challenge, you are free to model what you like as long as it pertains to something that happened or came to be in the year 2012. Be sure to make it something that would have a broad appeal and be recognizable to most people. The most important thing to do is relax and have a fun time modeling.

Standard Participation Rules apply.

SketchUp 3D Challenge #162 - Secret Lair

Thursday, 20 December 2012 - 31 December 2012

Secret lairs are a key location for many comic book characters and sometimes real groups or individuals. For a superhero, a secret lair is their main hideout that becomes essential in the concealment of their true identity and their home base for foiling villainy. For a villain, the secret lair is their hideout used to plot their villainy and obsess over defeating the superheros.

In this challenge you are to create a secret lair that fits the person or group that utilizes it. A clever entrance is the key to gaining access to the lair and keeping it out of reach from others and should be considered in your design. The lair can be located just about anywhere, from a cave to a below ground fortress to a hidden room in a mansion. Most of all, have fun and use your imagination.

SketchUp 3D Challenge #161 - Jet Pack

Monday, 10 December 2012 - Thursday 20 December 2012

Jet packs, AKA rocket packs and rocket belts, aren't currently practical or available as futurists had predicted they would be by now but what is cooler than a jet pack for getting around. If you can get past the expensive fuel costs, the limited amount of flight time and the risk of getting thrown into a sarlaac pit when something goes awry then perhaps a jet pack is for you. Just remember that a slight miscalculation of your flight prowess many lead to your death because you fly under the parachute threshold, ack!

So, if you're up to the challenge, make James Bond, Boba Fett and The Rocketeer proud and sketch away!

For the purposes of this challenge you may model a human figure (or use one you have made prior) or use one of the figures in the SketchUp 3D People library to "wear" your jet pack. (Make sure you import the 3D figure into your model so your entry will upload correctly).

Standard Participation Rules apply.

Swimming pools can be found just about anywhere, from backyards, to hotels, to amusement parks, to the tops of skyscrapers. They can even be found on large yachts and cruise ships. Swimming pools can be just about any size and shape and their design is only limited to their creator's imagination.

Tree houses, treehouses, or tree forts, are platforms or buildings constructed around, next to or among the trunk or branches of one or more mature trees while above ground level. Tree houses can be used for recreation, work space, habitation, observation or as temporary retreats.

Keeping in the theme of Summer and outdoors activity, your task is to design and model your very own tree house. It can be any shape or size as long as the entire structure is supported by one or more trees.

SketchUp 3D Challenge #142 - Observation Towers

Sunday, 22 April 2012 - Wednesday, 2 May 2012

View Entry Models | Status: Finished

In light of the 50th Anniversary of the Seattle Space Needle, Challenge #142 is to model an observation tower.  While the Space Needle has its trademark saucer shape, observation towers come in all shapes and sizes and serve a variety of purposes. Many of them double as radio towers and include restaurants and sometimes high speed thrill rides.

Your job is to model either an existing structure or design one out of your own creation. Feel free to make them as tall as you want and let your imagination escape you. The more detail the better... Be sure to make some nice scenes to show off your work. The most important thing is that you feel challenged and have fun.

Standard Participation Rules apply.

SketchUp 3D Challenge #141 - Hydrofoils

Sunday, 8 April 2012 - Wednesday, 18 April 2012

This time around you will be tasked with modeling hydrofoils; more specifically the synecdoche definition of a boat that uses hydrofoil technology. (I can believe I actually used synecdoche in a sentence!)  Big or small they can be fun to ride so shouldn't it also be fun to model one? Just be sure not to confuse them with hydroplanes because those are completely different.

Thanks to Sketchmaster Toth's suggestion for this topic. (Oh, and if you actually meant hydroplanes, don't worry, we'll get to that topic eventually.)

It's impossible to know when the first musical instruments were made but since their invent they have had an undeniable impact on all of society. Musical instruments of all types, shapes and sizes can be played with variable degrees of difficulty and even if we don't play them we all know when we've heard a sour note. But not to fear, your job is to model one, not play one.

For this challenge you can model any know type of instrument you choose down to every subtle detail and nuance. Be creative and set the scene to really show off your skills. Thanks to mikZ for the great suggestion.

SketchUp 3D Challenge #139 - Seaplanes

The term seaplane refers to any fixed-wing aircraft capable of taking off and landing on water. There are two main types of seaplanes are floatplanes (those with pontoons) and flying boats (those with fuselages that float). Both types may also have landing gear making them amphibious enabling them to use landing strips. You may model either type of seaplane or come up with your own concept. As long as it is a fixed-wing aircraft designed to take off and land on water, model to your hearts content!
