3D Challenge #060 - Gas Station

Note: The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.
Before you start modeling and posting, please read carefully the 3D Challenge participating manual and remember pre-made or downloaded components are not allowed.

This week's challenge:

Gas Station
A gas station is a facility which sells fuel and lubricants for motor vehicles. The most common fuels sold are gasoline (petrol) or diesel fuel.
Fuel dispensers are used to pump gasoline, diesel or other types of fuel into vehicles. Fuel dispensers are also known as bowsers. In recent times, filling stations have also added shops to their primary business.

You can model an existing or one of your own imagination station.
There must be, at least, gas pums and office.

As always, have fun and enjoy your modeling time!

  1. General Notes:
There will no obligation for a blog entry anymore. It is still allowed to post a link to your model or additional images, but it is not required anymore to submit a model to the challenges. The 3D Warehouse tag is still required though and should be added when uploading a model to the Warehouse.

You can use the hyperlink code creator on the frontpage of the blog to create the code for a hyperlink in your message. Copy this code and paste it in the comment box on the place where your want the hyperlink to be.

Challenge suggestions are welcome to be placed on the blog. Items will be noted and compiled on the moderator’s list. At that point, the initial comment for the suggestion may be deleted so as to maintain a streamline challenge thread for use of posting entries for the challenge and comments to models. Challenge suggestions have always been welcomed and taken under consideration.

Please refrain from using background images in your models as it is the model itself that is being judged.

You'll notice a new link on the main page that directs you to the First Place Certificate area to which winners are able to print a certificate with a picture of their model detailing their excellence. You can access the page through the main page of the blog.

    Have Fun!!!!

  3. Are gas stations from the futeure allowed? Or from outer space?

  4. Futuristic is ok, but from this world.
Remember the Tv cartoon "The Jetsons"? :)

  5. A mute point at this juncture, although my model incorporates a term not mentioned by
    Cosedimarco and believe worth mentioning.

    Wheelchair Accessible....

I didn't men Unlimited's model wasn't something providing gas, but it's not exactly a Station.
Models published so far are old, current or futuristic gas Station from this planet with gas pumps and offices as request.

I saw in these challenge that doing a starship or sci-fi vessel could solve every challenge topic. But this is another challenge

  19. I think that the idea behind these Challenges are to encourage others to make something they wouldn't ordinarily make. However good it is to think outside the square, keep it within the box!

  20. Well here is one to chew on. This entry represents a lot of work. The focus was on reality and presentation. there is much to see. I don't know if it's inside the box but it's definitely inside the cylinder. Come get our gas and see the goods at Rose Service Station.

  21. Here's my entry for this week: the Eurofuel Petrol / Gas Station. It's a big file, as I have tried to give the pumps as much detail as I could. It's my first entry for a while (since February actually!) so enjoy!

There is no longer a massive hole in the sky. I had thought to cover it up, but didn't think it was a big deal because: no scenes showed the opening. The color transition is not perfect, but it will have to do. Thanks for the input.

  23.   As was said before:The challenge is to help us learn to better use SketchUp and improve our modelling skills. I think there is not enough criticism in the model ratings. If there is any way my entries can be improved, I hope someone would be honest with me and not worry if they gave me less than five stars. I don't want to buy a good rating for my models by handing out 5-stars to everyone else. Constructive feedback is the only way for us all to improve. I appreciate those who give input and haven't given any stars. I believe, that, is the true vision of the challenge.

thankyou for your comment, i assume by sloppy building style you mean the style of the actual building rather than my modelling :P. if you read the comment on my model you will see that i've posted another 'model' with screenshots of the part of the game i was emulating. anyway...

by paintbrushing i assume you mean the ground? (and also the palm leaves if you noticed, but that was very subtle). the actual process isnt too complicated, but requires some photoshop knowhow...

    1) in sketchup i set the camera to parralel projection and then selected top down view and moved the model so that the entire compound was showing. this basically gives you a 'satelite' photo of your image. *note - at this point the ground was still a solid grey colour - important for later*

    2) i then exported the top down image as a jpeg and opened it in photoshop. using the magic wand tool i selected the ground colour and made it transparent.

    3) (in photoshop) i made a new layer, of the same resolution as the top down image and put it underneath. this meant i could paint on this new layer, but i could always see the buildings/walls etc.

    4) theres no simple way to descibe the next step, other than i painted a ground texture, using various brushes and colours etc.

    5) i then selected the grey area (Road) and applied a filter to it which added grain. this made it look a little more like road.

    6) i then deleted the satelite photo layer, leaving the ground texture layer which i had painted. and exported it as a jpeg.

    7) FINALLY BACK TO SKETCHUP...
i imported the jpeg and positioned it above a terrain from scratch model i made (look at the hidden geometry in my model - you should understand, its pretty simple).

    8) i then opened the paint tool and used the dropper to sample the texture from the imported ground texture image and painted the terrain.

    - i did exactly the same thing for the palm leaves aswell. its a very subtle difference from using a normal leaf texture but you will notice a dark ridge down the middle of the leaf. it looks infinitly better.

hope this answers your question and didnt bore you to death, looks a bit lengthy looking back at it :S

Thanks for the response. I am still pretty new to photo shop and the long explaination was good. I wondered if the 'brushing' was done with some plug-in, but you have answered that question. It is a great trick for more realism. Maybe I will try it in the future. By the way; yes that is what I meant about the 'sloppy building style'. It was more work, I'm sure, and added to your model greatly. :)

  26. @ All
Common simple mistakes I often found in models are:
    - Reverse faces;
    - Lines that should be hidden or smoothed;
    - No use of groups and components.

    General note:
Questions in the WH rating system are ok, but if users copy them in the blog there could be a wider audience and answering capabilities. ;)

  27. is there anyone still doing the challenges that was here when they were 'Open Challenges'?

-i like the voting system from back then... is was constructive. and let people give tips rather than just voting.

also, this poll system seems open to abuse. or is that just my paranoia? lol
