3D Challenge #061 - SteamPunk Object

Note:
The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.
Before you start modeling and posting, please read carefully the 3D Challenge participating manual and pre-made or downloaded components are not allowed.

This week's challenge:

SteamPunk Object

This challenge will be a special, two weeks challenge. You will be modeling a Steampunk item. The item you choose is up to you, so use your two weeks to your advantage to create something unique. Steampunk is the art of making something using older materials, which originally came to make things using steam power. Steampunk is now a style that uses older technologies, such as analogue and steam or air power.

Good luck to all, and have fun!!!

  1. General Notes:
There will no obligation for a blog entry anymore. It is still allowed to post a link to your model or additional images, but it is not required anymore to submit a model to the challenges. The 3D Warehouse tag is still required though and should be added when uploading a model to the Warehouse.

You can use the hyperlink code creator on the frontpage of the blog to create the code for a hyperlink in your message. Copy this code and paste it in the comment box on the place where your want the hyperlink to be.

Challenge suggestions are welcome to be placed on the blog. Items will be noted and compiled on the moderator’s list. At that point, the initial comment for the suggestion may be deleted so as to maintain a streamline challenge thread for use of posting entries for the challenge and comments to models. Challenge suggestions have always been welcomed and taken under consideration.

Please refrain from using background images in your models as it is the model itself that is being judged.

You'll notice a new link on the main page that directs you to the First Place Certificate area to which winners are able to print a certificate with a picture of their model detailing their excellence. You can access the page through the main page of the blog.

Remminder: This is a two(2) week challenge!

    Have Fun!!!!

Before someone get out of topic I suggest a wikipedia page about Steam power,
SteamPunk and if you don't have yet seen, an anime "Steam Boy" by Katsuhiro Otomo.
Have a good time and good luck

  7. are we allowed to use textures from other sites?cos the challenge rules state that all of the model must be yours

  8. I have a question, I posted a mirror and I would want to know if it could be accepted in the challenge .
Because for small furnitures like mirrors it's harder I think to see the difference ..

  9. The way I see it, if it's steampunk it can be on the challenge. But at the end of the day you post models to win, so if you don't think it may win, don't put it on. At the moment there is very little on the challege, so I thought I might as well make an item of furniture.

steampunk stuff is steampunk stuff its all funky. my model should be up by at latest on tuesday it's pretty weird and complicated too, and yeah the challenge boards are pretty dry right now, but give it a day or two I think alot of the other modelers are taking there time with this one. I just hope all the models for this challenge will be great.

  13. does anybody find it suspicious that 'Jansen' has entered 3 competitions so far.

in the mobile phone challenge he placed 3rd, however, he only had ONE rating on the warehouse.

in the gas station challenge he has 3 ratings on the warehouse (12:27 13/10/08 GMT), however, he has 4 votes to win on the poll!!!!!!!!!
    THIS DOES NOT MATCH UP!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I voted for the Rose gas station

    ReplyDelete
  15. that was very inarticulately said...

what i mean to say is does anybody think he's voting for himself a bunch of times? the numbers don't match!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Dont you think that if I actually was going to go around voting for myself, I would at least vote more???? Otherwise there would be no point???

    ReplyDelete
  17. If I actually thought that my model was better,I would probably throw in a vote for myself. Otherwise it would be extremely lame to do so

    ReplyDelete
  18. @ jansen

if you look in your mobile phone entry, when you turn hidden geometry on...

why is there half of what looks like a razr v3 (or mabye some other phone) there? because the main body of your phone kinda looks like an elongated, messed about version of the main body of a v3.

also, why is the name samsung upside down compared to the keypad (which isn't even sliding)??

    ReplyDelete
  19. Originally the phone was supposed to be the Samsung Alias. However I got tired of working on it, so I stopped applying features that are unique to that particular phone.

I wont argue with you, the model is not exactly what I would call a work of art, but the Samsung label is not upside down. If you look closely at the phone I started to model it after you will notice that it is correct.

In addition, if you examine the Samsung Alias you will also see that it is a sliding phone.

    ReplyDelete
  20. the samsung alias is a clamshell, not a sliding phone.

  21. Let us all stop fighting! Jansen's models for the last few challenges have been pretty darn good and very vote-worthy. i think he has earned those votes. The Rose Service Station is only my second challenge entry, and it is doing very well in the poll. I don't ask others to vote on my models or manipulate the poll in any way. I don't even vote for myself. I vote for someone else who I feel has an excellent model. Yet I am still in the lead. So; please don't accuse anybody of cheating just because they have few ratings. The model still gets seen, even if it doesn't get rated.

    ReplyDelete
  22. i second that.

a wise man once said... he who argues on the internet may win, but he's just as retarded as the man who lost.

    :P

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Anonymous
I don't see the correlation between number of ratings and number of votes. Anyone can rate a model, however, by rating it, it doesn't indicate that they will vote for it. The majority of people who rate a model rate more than one for each challenge but can only make one vote. Your argument is quite illogical. Also, why are you hiding behind "anonymous"?

  24. cloudedzero,

re: your comment on steampunk tallboy by crazy eyes ["Steampunk is the art of making something using older materials" So I think this is steampunk]

that sounds to me like making old stuff. steampunk is more like making something more modern with old materials ie a laptop. (search google for steampunk latop). so making something which is old anyway is just making something old. if someone made a saucepan and put some gold trimming on it it wouldn't make it steampunk.

"Steampunk is the art of making something using older materials"-cosedmarco/loganc whichever posted challenge thread! I just restated it

  26. cloudedzero,

doesn't mean Logan's definition was necessarily perfect though.

i really liked your model btw, looking at the organic body i couldn't imagine how you did that! however (and i really don't want to be harsh) what is it supposed to be? because you haven't really described it much. is it some sort of flying mechanical bot? great model.

    henry

    ReplyDelete
  27. cloudzero,

this is the model im making (annoyingly someone else looks like they've already finshed a model of the exact same thing. but anyway...

halfway down it has a really good explanation of steampunk

"steampunk refers to Victorian styled modern technology."

    ReplyDelete
  28. @ Cloudedzero
I agreed with Henry Stone. In previously posts I recomend to search wikipedia for clarity
i post the definition of Steampunk: "The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions".
A victorian wardrobe is not Steampunk it's just a victorian furniture.
You should create working objects, powered by steam with an old style.

  29. anyone else think its convinient that jensens model got another vote (putting it in joint second) with 1 hour to spare?

  30. I got picasa working so i can show you all the images without having to download my so called "Big Files"

    here is a link

    "FIRE SPOCKET"

    and to the model

Don't get your feelings hurt, but
I have noticed; that many of you seem either to not care, or do not know how, to change the entity count on circular and arced geometries, and do not consider the relative size to the model. For instance: a small tube will be given 24 sides when as many as twelve would be excessive, and a large rounded item will have twenty-four sides, (again by default) and look like a cooper's barrel; where 36 entities, or more, would be needed to look smooth. Many a model could improve, or be trimmed by making time for this easy 'right-click' modification. If this is something that any of you do not understand; please, ask for clarification. I, and several others, I'm sure, will be glad to help.

    ReplyDelete
  32. honestly, i care nothing for the common downloader. the only reason i make the edges less then 24 is if i need a certain shape or my computer is lagging.

not saying anyone else should do it, just telling everyone not to tell me to.

I dont mean to be rude or anything but finished is finished and I like a hole lot of other members like finished products yes low file size is great because of the people still using dial up but hey they can wait a minute or two to look at my models or not, I dont really care...

  34. I got an idea for a next challenge, a safe room . It could be impressive .

Then, do you know when we could re-start to vote to choose it ?
Have you find a solution ?

    ReplyDelete
  35. @onlybots man & emozorbo

Broadband or dial-up doesn't change the way a model is handled by someones computer. If this were such aproblem for me, do you think that I would be turning in 4MB challenge entries? Many skilled SketchUp users consider the ability to make a model look good with as few polygons as possible the best skill a 3D modeler can have. This is particularly important for game designers. Disregard me if you wish; I don't care if you want to learn or not, but anybody else may want to consider this. All you have to do now is: close your eyes, and pretend I'm not here. Maybe some screaming might help too.

    ReplyDelete
  36. @tinkle ploy

    first emozorbo thats funny

second strike up a band and sing along

    la la we dont care
    la la we dont care
    la laaa wee dont care
la la we .. dont .. CAAAARRRRE!!!

    Thank you

oh and by the way I have a model that is only 143kb and will lock your computer up for just loading it..

    (I am Zorbo)

    ReplyDelete
  37. @cloudedzero

Well, apparently you do care how well people can view your models, because you have put them in the warehouse, for ALL to see. I know you don't want to care, especially in front of me, and thats fine. I can handle that... How does that tune go again? By the way; anybody can copy the same component fifty times over and call it "a 143kB model that will lock up your computer".

    ReplyDelete
  38. @all who comemted on StettleMeyer I Reuploaded my entry with a leather texture

    @TinkleToy

I care what people think about my model that is not what Im saying! What Im saying is if your computer cant handle my models then get a new one because my computer is over 3 years old and can handle my modeling skills and I can look at any body elses models with ease I just turn off the shadows and I never have any problems so if you are having problems looking at models turn of the shadows and the poly problem will go away oh and yes I dont care what you in general have to say about modeling with lower poly's levels because cleanliness is next to godliness...

    (cloudedzero)

    ReplyDelete
  39. im not sure if this is right, but o think cloudedzero cares for the model, but not for the viewer. That is what i believe.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Amen, Jumpman.

    Pure selfishness.

Now; I will leave room for those who wish to learn.

    ReplyDelete
  41. its not selfishness. infact its selfish of anyone else to tell me to make my models lower detail, you should be grateful and not upset with the fact that you get what you get from me and you'll have to live with it. I am not saying i will not accept critisism though, just ask me to lower my file size and i will kindly...refuse...

vote for my model or else!!!...ill...eat a cow...

    mr.jumpman v.2...
    ish...
    yea you get the point...
    ...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Here is my unfinished entry. It will not get completed for the deadline, but maybe by next challenge. I was a bit too ambitious on my Ornithopter, but its going to be sweet when it is done.

    ReplyDelete
  43. i have to agree with jumpman on the issue of the viewer's needs/appearence of my model.

i keep my poly as low as i can without sacrificing the end product. if i can get away with lowering the sides in a circle or tube then i do it, but if it needs to be round then it needs to be round. often if the model is too much, then i include scenes with the textures turned off. i rarely use the shadows, as i find that using sun for shading makes the model look as good without the lag.

as far as i can see, the limit is 10kb... i make my poly count as low as i can simply because i have a lot to put into that model. with what ive learned about saving size, im confident that if i can think it up then i can fit it into a postable model.

the question is do you want an end result that is worth looking at despite the ocasional lag, or somthing that you know for a fact could have looked better?

blah blah blah, i rant when im sick.

    ReplyDelete
  44. i meant the limit is 10 MB, not kb...

you know what i meant... leave me alone im sick....
