  1. General Notes:
There will no obligation for a blog entry anymore. It is still allowed to post a link to your model or additional images, but it is not required anymore to submit a model to the challenges. The 3D Warehouse tag is still required though and should be added when uploading a model to the Warehouse.

You can use the hyperlink code creator on the frontpage of the blog to create the code for a hyperlink in your message. Copy this code and paste it in the comment box on the place where your want the hyperlink to be.

Challenge suggestions are welcome to be placed on the blog. Items will be noted and compiled on the moderator’s list. At that point, the initial comment for the suggestion may be deleted so as to maintain a streamline challenge thread for use of posting entries for the challenge and comments to models. Challenge suggestions have always been welcomed and taken under consideration.

Please refrain from using background images in your models as it is the model itself that is being judged.

You'll notice a new link on the main page that directs you to the First Place Certificate area to which winners are able to print a certificate with a picture of their model detailing their excellence. You can access the page through the main page of the blog.

    Good Luck and have fun!!!

  2. (thats really odd i had a dream last night that the next challenge would be a crane! :o)

but yea should be cool :)

i basically haven't got my museum entry at a vaguely near passable stage yet cos my brother has been visiting and he's moving out of the country next week and stuff. also its the holidays here in england and i thought it was still tuesday :P

[on a grumpy conspiracy theorist type note...
anyone think that its odd that there were FORTY SIX votes for the hamster cage challenge ( as of 19/2/09 13:02) but only 12 entries and even fewer people posting on the forums?]

    ReplyDelete
  3. not really, I always vote though I rarely enter, and some other people might do that, any one who stumbles across this blog might, though they might not download the model, which is not in my opinion a good thing at all.

  4. I almost always vote and I have never entered the chalenge.

  5. Great idea. One question: is the challenge limited to mobile cranes or would any crane be acceptable?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Any crane will do except for the avian kind.

    ReplyDelete
  7. i really hope its any cos i've been modelling this for about 5 hours now.

  8. Jedi Charles is correct, any kind but the bird itself.
So Henry, you can just keep on going with that model! I look forward to seeing it!

  9. This is the crane I'm modeling for the challenge:

  10. this is actually going to be my first challenge that i am going to enter. On another note i think that the next challenge should be passenger cruisliners with major rooms only designed that are inside the ship.

  11. Just for those of you wondering, the poll for the museum challenge should be up tomorrow! Sorry for the delay!

  12. do you think this crane would be allowed?

im not an admin but im fairly sure that'd be allowed. looks like a crane to me :P

have you got more photos of it though? cos its not that clear. you might be in for a challenge. but then again i guess thats what this is all about :)

  18. Does anyone have any advice on how to master Sketchup? I am a novice.. but I would like to get to the point where I can make anything with Sketchup. Especially more organic shapes like the curves on cars etc.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @annonamous

unfortunately the only way to master sketchup is practice - ie making lots of different things.

and without trying to advertise the 3d challenges... they were a great way for me to practice when i started out - they gave me focus and something to aim for which is always where i fall down - not being driven to finish something.

the only other think of is video tutorials, if they're still around. i havent watched any in ages but they're probably out there somewhere.

  20. Thanks for the reply Henry.

Did you have any experience with 3D modeling in other programs before stating with Sketchup? I am wonder if I learn to model things using other software it would help me with Sketchup.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @annonamous

i had tried blender before i found (and fell in love with) sketchup. however, in my opinion sketchup is far easier. i would say that having a little background knowledge of other 3d modelling programs has been handy on occasion but i do 99% of my 3d modelling in sketchup.

if i was to split down a typical project into time spent on different programs it would probably be something as follows...
    sketchup7 80%
    photoshop 19%
    windows calculator 1%

anyway... back to the point. trying other programs wont help all that much. if it was me starting from scratch again i'd just use sketchup for now.

how's your crane coming along? :P

  22. No crane for me. :( My skethup skills are pretty weak so I just do projects that I am inspired about design wise.

  24. I would be leaving review comments for you guy except lately my HughesNet satellite Internet has been choking on the AJAX based technology the 3d Warehouse uses to post the ratings and reviews. I tried in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera and all it does is display "Saving..." for an indefinite amount of time. So, here we go:

    @a.j.unknow: 5 stars, excellent as usual. :)

    @TAN TUNNY: 5 stars, very nice. :)

@moboille: 4 stars, good work, it appears there are textures hidden and unused in the model that are contributing to filesize.

@Michael Papa: 4 stars, Nice design and use of textures, next time try using components instead of groups for parts that are repeated to help keep filesize down. You did use a components for part of the tower but used groups for the rest.

@henry: 4.5 stars, Nice work, massive crane. Could shave down filesize by making non tapered sections of the boom repeated components as well for the rail posts on top of house.

@francis_nyc, "sit BuBu sit, good dawg": 3 stars, nice work from a distance, but upclose many seams of the tower do not line up, there is a lot of overlapping of faces and many unnecessary line segment should be removed. Using components for many of the detailed and repeated parts would have cut file size way down.

@francis_nyc, RTG - Rubber Tire Gantry Crane: 3 stars, nice job, no problem with seams and overlapping faces this time, but again, no componentization and this time the crane isn't wide enough to get the container from ground-to-truck or truck-to-ground because the fenders will be in the way.

@francis_nyc, Origami Crane: 4 stars, very nice concept and good execution. You could use components for the legs and other parts but considering it's supposed to be made of paper, and again money, you would expect the parts to not all look the same and besides, the filesize is tiny.

@JaViXP: 4 stars, great use of groups and components, however it could use more detail such as pulleys, a pivot joint for the crane to rotate and other such parts that make a crane work.

    ty for feedback :)

i agree with what you said about my boom. originally with the repeated sections i implemented it with components. however, i didn't like the edges being repeated and a number of other factors made me just explode them all and put it into one group. [also i used 8sided circles instead of the default 24 to save space a bit].

similarly; for the railings on the top, because each one is ever so slightly different from all the others (i think - im not sure now that im writing this) i didn't use components. also they're made from cuboids so it wouldn't have saved a significant amount of space.

    ty for feedback + Rating

What I do when I dont want to see edges when two components are put together is to delete the faces that touch eachother in each component, then I hide the edges that touch eachother. An easy way to hide edges is to hold down shift and use the eraser tool. A good example of that is my Roadster Golf Cart, the body components are modeled on just one side then copied and mirrored for the other side with the joining edges hidden. It was hard for me to account for your file size because it seems very optimised.

  27. OK, now I can post reviews and ratings so I'm copying my reviews there now... It figures.

    you GENIUS ! :P

thats so simple i cant believe i forgot about the faces, thats why the lines wouldn't hide! ty :)
