SketchUp 3D Challenge #133 - Community Christmas Tree

Sunday, 18 December 2011 - Wednesday, 28 December 2011

View Entry Models | Status: Finished

The community Christmas tree has been a holiday tradition around the United States since the early 20th Century that now spans around the world. Let us celebrate this tradition by modeling one in SketchUp!

You are not limited to just fresh cut or live trees, you may also decorate a structure that a community disguises to create their tree. Use your imagination and don't hold back. If you feel like doing the entire town square, go ahead but don't run out of time.

Mr. Gosselin, a 9th Grade Art teacher, heard about 3D Challenge #331 - Banks and thought it would be a perfect exercise for his students to participate in the challenge. He wrote on our Facebook page to let us know about it and asked if the challenge could be extended to accommodate his teaching schedule. A compromise was reached and it was decided to create a special challenge for his students to allow their work to be voted on and to receive recognition for their work. So here we are...

It's a tie! The winners of SketchUp 3D Student Challenge #001 - Banks are $uperBank by Morgan B. and Majectic Bank by Kaila V.  Congratulations on a job well done and thanks for all the great entries!

Snowmobile

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A snowmobile, also known in some places as a snowmachine, or sled, is a land vehicle for winter travel on snow. Designed to be operated on snow and ice, they require no road or trail. Design variations enable some machines to operate in deep snow or forests; most are used on open terrain, including frozen lakes, or driven on paths or trails. Usually designed to accommodate a driver and one passenger, their use is much like a motorcycle and an all-terrain vehicle (ATVs) intended for winter use on snow-covered ground and frozen ponds and waterways. They have no enclosure except for a windshield and their engine normally drives a continuous track or tracks at the rear; skis at the front provide directional control.
 A standard participation rules apply.

SketchUp 3D Challenge #131 - Banks

Sunday, 20 November 2011 - Wednesday, 30 November 2011

View Entry Models | Status: Finished

For this challenge you will be asked to Occupy SketchUp and model a bank. Piggy banks while cute and oh so cuddly in a cold, hard, porcelain kind of way, but they do not apply to this challenge. We are talking about commercial banks, the kind where you deposit your hard earned cash and fees begin to dwindle down your balance.

You can design a hometown branch, a credit union, a big institutional city bank with elaborate Gothic architecture or anything in between. In addition to this you may choose to model a bank of the past, present or future. And please, no mattresses, coffee cans or anything shoe involved because that may indicate you actually do that...

All standard participation rules apply.

SketchUp 3D Challenge #130 - Flying Cars

Thursday, 3 November 2011 – Wednesday, 16 November 2011

View Entry Models | Status: Finished

For this challenge you will be modeling a flying car or a hover car. Flying cars may be defined in many ways but, for the purposes of this challenge a flying car is defined a vehicle designed for 2 to 6 passengers, that is operated by its owner for daily use, that’s primary means of movement is through flight and would take the place of today's automobile. This also includes landspeeders, airspeeders. Jetsonian aerocars, VTOLs, etc.

You may model an existing flying car design, real or fictional, or you may design your own out of your imagination. Your submitted flying car may have wheels but they are purely optional. The vehicle’s means of propulsion may be based in reality or complete sci-fi non-sense (and even though my handle is JediCharles and have a fondness of sci-fi tech, it is still non-sense).

All standard participation rules apply.

New Admin, JediCharles!

I am happy to announce that I, JediCharles, have been named as the new admin for the Google SketchUp 3D Challenge! Since May, 2008 I have participated in 41 separate challenges and have had the opportunity to win a total of 10 times. Participating in the challenge has been a lot of fun and I look forward to keeping the spirit of the challenge alive.
You should expect interesting challenge topics that will spur your imagination and keep your modeling skills sharp. I am currently working on new ways to showcase challenge winners in addition to recognition on the blog and challenge certificates.
I would also like to take a moment to thank MILO Minderbinder for doing an outstanding job during his year and a half tenure as admin for the Challenge. Your efforts deserve a lot of gratitude and will not be forgotten.
Please take a moment to express your thanks to Milo by commenting on this post.
Thanks,
JediCharles

Challenge blog under construction

Dear 3D Challengers,

First of all, you might have noticed not a lot of activity going on on this blog. We're very sorry, and it may remind you of the silent period after Challenge #098. I just wanted to let you know, the site is under construction, and soon we'll be up and running again. That's the good news.

The sad news is, that I will be leaving all of you! I've made some great friends among the followers of the 3D Challenge, and it's been a good year and-a-half since I first came here. We already have a new candidate for Challenge moderator, but it will be a surprise for everyone.

You can still email me on infophenix01@gmail.com, for anything you want to know, or just to have a chat, but I won't be updating the blog anymore. It has been a fun time, and maybe, I'll join you in the Challenge!

Like Bruce says:
Happy Sketching,
Milo

The subject of Challenge #129 is City Hall! Above, you can see the former city hall of San Francisco, which was built over 25 years. But sadly, it was destroyed in 1906 by a big earthquake. On the site today stand the new public library.
Design a new City Hall for any city in any kind of shape, or make yourself a beautifully photo-textured geo-located model of an existing one. It doesn't really matter what it looks like, as long as it can serve as City hall!

Maybe this can get you some inspiration: Sunday the 17th, the third Sunday of July, is national Ice Cream day! Maybe a memorial for Mrs. Mary Eales, the inventor of Ice Cream? Have fun!

Your head must be boiling with inspiration alread, so get modeling right away! But most importantly, have fun!

It almost summertime and the weather is high, dust of your BBQ's and fry those porkchops! Everyone likes a good old fashioned barbecue! Design your own barbecue or grill, that will completely change the world of barbecues, or design a retro barbeque with some charbroiled hamburgers, it really doesn't matter. As long as it is somehow a device to prepare a great steak. Have fun!

'Anything?' you might think, and the answer is 'Yes, absolutely anything'. As there wasn't really one subject we could settle on, we've decided to go crazy, and have you all design something you choose! So GoldenSim, design that Flying boat! And HenkieTenk, build that Bridge! There is only one condition: you may NOT use any components already uploaded to the 3D Warehouse. But that shouldn't be that hard! (By the way, the image shown above doesn't make any sense, if you were wondering)

Requested by some of you, the subject for this challenge is 'Abandoned Places'. The image above shows one of three Soong Sisters Houses, in the center of Singapore, mysteriously abandoned in the 1980s. The estimated value of the complex is 465 milion USD. Nobody knows who owns them, how old they are, who lived there, etcetera. The houses are said to be haunted, and every day tourists come to visit the ruins. They are surrounded by tall condominium towers, in one of the most developed areas of the city. The challenge in this Challenge, is to try to make your model mysterious; the viewer should be wondering where it is located, why it is abandoned.
Good luck!
