Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.
This week's challenge:
Skyscraper
This weeks challenge will be to develop a skyscraper. This can be your own design or an existing building. Web research has defined this to be a building as short as 35 meters (115 feet). Our target will be between 80 Meters (262 feet) and 500 Meters (1640 feet). Unlike models built for Google Earth, which are primarily textured driven with basic shapes beneath, we are still interested in 3D development of a nice model. Textures will be off during judging. This will give all a chance to use repeating patterns and hole cutting components. The challenge will be more about main shape design concepts than creating a highly detailed building. Although there are guidelines via web search for multiple tower structures, choice between architectural style and number of towers are of your choice.
Good luck all!

Congrats to ALL!!!!!!!!
I'm not sure if I should attempt a skyscraper, but I will anyway. Stay tuned!
ReplyDeleteWhy shouldn't you try to make a skyscraper, numberxguy? Even the best sketchupper wouldn't have his skills if he didn't just try. It's all a learning proces of getting used to the program and it's possibilities. I'm looking forward to your skyscrape model(s). Remember, complexity is not important in these challenges, a proper model is.
ReplyDeleteFor the people who need some architectural inspiration, check out this skyscraper website:

Click on the diagrams to see lots of designs being build all over the world.
Good luck all,

i have this idea in my head but it's not really working so far... i'll keep trying though!!
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to Oz the Wiz's Time Machine? Why can't we vote for that one?
ReplyDeleteOz the wiz/oscar is just as me, Bluesdog, Logan and Rahul Desai part of the admin team of this blog. We decided unanimously,
ReplyDeletenot to let our models take part of the voting of the challenges, to give everybody a fair chance. Of course we do like to model ourselves and that's why you will find models of us on the blog.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteThis is my first challenge.
Model at 3D Warehouse
This is the tallest building around my place.
:-)
@All Modelers
ReplyDeleteWhen posting models to the warehouse, PLEASE try to use a Title other than just the challenge topic. When setting up the voting polls, we need to combine the Blog user name, Warehouse User name and model name and make sense of it on the poll. If topic is “Train Set”, please look in warehouse first and name your model something that is different than previously used. Having 6 models called “Train Set” makes it hard to set up the polls and also makes it easier to correctly cast your vote.
Lastly, posting to the blog.
I have personally added blog entries for models found in the warehouse (correctly tagged) with no blog entry. Again, matching up the Blog names, warehouse names and models is time consuming for all the mod’s and we all try to make sure a model is not left out of the voting. Once a vote is cast, a model can no longer be added to the list. That’s a software issue. So, PLEASE post to the blog when entering.
Thanks in advance
Bluesdog

Hello all,
ReplyDeleteMy skyscraper can be found here:
Fictional Skyscraper (WIP)
Please tell me what you think/suggestions, etc. It is still a work in progress, but I am pretty much finished with the general shape. Everything looks great!

ok, several design changes later, but here's my skyscraper
ReplyDeleteTri-Tower
architecture is not my strong point.
main tower 1,255 feet tall (not including atennea.
Haha Tom,
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if you meant for that to be a pun or not, but I thought your wording was kind of funny.
"architecture is not my strong point"
Anyway, I've also got a model in the works that I may submit. I never seem to have time to complete a full model to my liking before deadline, but with this long weekend, I've got a good start! :)

hey all, uploaded my second ever entry and my first in quite a while.
ReplyDeleteits the proposed BAF 2010 tower for Buenos Aires. Haven't textured it cos modelling it took ages tbh and its a bit taller than the allowed height but i think its pretty cool.

Howdy all, well I make it in time this round. With this challenge the model of the skyscraper was made with an emphasis on sculpture. Also the model is complex but tried to keep the file small. As always I'm open for comments and suggestions. These challenges have been a grate learning place for me.
ReplyDeleteSkyscraperSculpture
Howdy again. Something went wrong with the last post. I got a message that someone was trying to access my computer. And the link won't work. anyone have any suggestions.
ReplyDeleteDon
Don, remove the "+/" portion of your link. That should do the trick. (Beats me how it got there in first place...)
ReplyDeleteOscar, I tried again without the "+/". It did the same thing and took me to the Google web search. I loaded Spybot last night and ran that program. Could that have caused the problem?
ReplyDeleteDon
Don, if I look at your link I can see that it's directing to a secured page instead of a normal webpage (https:// instead of http://). If you remove the "s" from https your link works as it should be. The message you're probably getting is an error with this secured connection, as it does not exist. In those cases google is probably directing to it's default page, the search engine. I can't explain why the secured url got there in the first place. Spybot should not affect this as far as I know.
