Snowflake

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A snowflake is either a single ice crystal or an aggregation of ice crystals which falls through the Earth's atmosphere. They begin as snow crystals which develop when microscopic supercooled cloud droplets freeze. Snowflakes come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Complex shapes emerge as the flake moves through differing temperature and humidity regimes, such that individual snowflakes are nearly unique in structure. Snowflakes encapsulated in rime form balls known as graupel. Snowflakes appear white in color despite being made of clear ice. This is due to diffuse reflection of the whole spectrum of light by the small crystal facets.
Your challenge is to design and model a snowflake or snowflakes and then display them in a way that showcases them. An additional requirement is that the featured snowflakes must be three-dimensional and not simple 2D faces. Enjoy the challenge and Happy Holidays!

SketchUp 3D Challenge #196 - Chariots

Thursday, 12 December 2013 - Monday, 23 December 2013

Chariot

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The chariot is a type of carriage using animals (almost always horses)[1] to provide rapid motive power. Chariots were used for war as "battle taxis" and mobile archery platforms, as well as more peaceable pursuits such as hunting or racing for sport, and as a chief vehicle of many ancient peoples, when speed of travel was desired rather than how much weight could be carried. The original chariot was a fast, light, open, two-wheeled conveyance drawn by two or more horses that were hitched side by side. The car was little more than a floor with a waist-high semicircular guard in front. The chariot, driven by a charioteer, was used for ancient warfare during the bronze and the iron ages. Armor was limited to a shield. The vehicle was used for travel, in processions, games, and races after it had been superseded by other vehicles for military purposes.
For the purposes of this challenge, your chariot can be from any era or culture as long as it is powered by harness animals. It is not necessary to model the animal but you are welcome to if you find the time.

Aircraft cabin (interior)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An aircraft cabin is the section of an aircraft in which passengers travel. At cruising altitudes of modern commercial aircraft the surrounding atmosphere is too thin for passengers and crew to breathe without an oxygen mask, so cabins are pressurized at a higher pressure than ambient pressure at altitude.
For this challenge you are to model an aircraft interior of your own design as long as it is meant for passengers. You don't need to be concerned with the cockpit or any other part of the aircraft, just the interior where passengers ride is part of the challenge. You can choose to model any type of interior from commercial passenger jets to private jet or even a helicopter passenger compartment.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A billiard table or billiards table is a bounded table on which billiards-type games (cue sports) are played. In the modern era, all billiards tables (whether for carom billiards, pool or snooker) provide a flat surface usually made of quarried slate, that is covered with cloth and surrounded by vulcanized rubber cushions, with the whole elevated above the floor.
For this challenge, you are free to design and model any type of billiards table you like. This includes pool, carom billiards, snooker and English billiards tables and any of the various novelty billiards tables.

Game character

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A game character refers to a character in a game, especially a video game or role-playing game.
More specifically, it may refer to:
  • Player character, a character in a video game or role playing game who is controlled or controllable by a player, typically a protagonist the game's plot.
    • Alternate character, a controllable character in addition to one's "primary" player character.
  • Non-player character, or NPC, a character that is controlled by the gamemaster in tabletop role-playing games. In video games and other scenarios with character representations, an NPC is controlled by a program.
    • Boss (video gaming), a computer-controlled opponent in an enemy-based challenge, which is found in video games.
    • Mob (video gaming), a computer-controlled non-player character (NPC) or monster in a computer game such as a role-playing video game.
In this challenge you are to create an all new video game character to fit in the video game genre of your choice. The trick is to make it obvious that it is intended to be in a video game; how you do this is entirely up to you.

Hotel rooms are a necessity to many people when they travel. They can be a place to relax after a long day or in some cases they will make you wish you never left home. Hotel amenities vary greatly from place to place from just a bed, a table, a phone, a TV and an ensuite to multiple rooms with full kitchens and all the comforts of home. They can be as small as a pod in a capsule hotel or as big as a multi-floor penthouse suite.

In this challenge you are free to design and model any type of hotel or motel room you like. Just be sure to stay away from the mini-bar as you model; they can be pretty pricy.

Recreational fishing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Recreational fishing, also called sport fishing, is fishing for pleasure or competition. It can be contrasted with commercial fishing, which is fishing for profit, or subsistence fishing, which is fishing for survival.
The most common form of recreational fishing is done with a rod, reel, line, hooks and any one of a wide range of baits. Other devices, commonly referred to as terminal tackle, are also used to affect or complement the presentation of the bait to the targeted fish. Some examples of terminal tackle include weights, floats, and swivels. Lures are frequently used in place of bait. Some hobbyists make handmade tackle themselves, including plastic lures and artificial flies. The practice of catching or attempting to catch fish with a hook is known as angling.
In this challenge you are to model a recreational fishing boat stocked with all the fishing gear one would need for a recreational fishing trip. This would include the rods, reels, lures, and every kind of tackle you would expect to see in addition to the boat, the safety equipment and storage for the fish caught.

Legendary creature

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A legendary creature is an animal whose life is accounted in non-historical or yet to be verified stories that sometime involve the supernatural. However, other legendary animals, such as the unicorn, were documented in accounts of natural history by various scholars of antiquity. Due to the lack of fossils of these creatures, the veracity of these historical recordings is questioned by modern zoologists.
In this challenge you are free to model any kind of legendary or mythological creature you like. This is not to be confused with mythological gods, divine and semi-divine beings.

SketchUp 3D Challenge #185 - String Instruments

Monday, 19 August 2013 - Thursday, 29 August 2013

String instrument

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
String instruments are musical instruments that produce sound from vibrating strings. In the Hornbostel-Sachs scheme of musical instrument classification, used in organology, they are called chordophones. Some common instruments in the string family are guitar, sitar, rabab, electric bass, violin, viola, cello, double bass, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, bouzouki, and harp.
In this challenge you are to model a string instrument of your choice.  There are a lot of fine details in string instruments so be sure not to leave those out or you might hit a sour note.  So fiddle with your fiddle and harp over your harp, but, most importantly, have fun.

SketchUp 3D Challenge #184 - Racktrack

Thursday, 08 August 2013 - Monday, 19 August 2013

Race track

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A race track (or 'racetrack', 'racing track' or 'racing circuit') is a facility built for racing of animals (e.g. horse racing or greyhound racing), vehicles, or athletes. A race track also may feature grandstands or concourses. Racetracks are also used in the study of animal locomotion. Some motorsport tracks are called speedways.

A racetrack is a permanent facility or building. Racecourse is an alternate term for a horse racing track, found in countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates. Race tracks built for bicycles are known as velodromes. Circuit is a common alternate term for racetrack, given the usual circuitous configuration of most race tracks, allowing races to occur over several laps.
In this challenge you are to model a complete race track ready for a race including areas for spectators. You may create a track for animals, vehicles or athletes.

SketchUp 3D Challenge #183 - Personalized Mugs

Monday, 29 July 2013 - Thursday, 08 August 2013

Mugs come in all shapes and sizes and are designed to contain hot or cold beverages. Their designs range from simplistic to ornate and often one's favorite mug represents a manifestation of the individual's personality.

In this challenge, you are to design a mug that specifically represents you and your personality. This can include your favorite activities, things you enjoy, or literally anything that represents you as a person. An ordinary mug with a simple screen printed saying will not do; it should be modeled with a high level of detail that shows off your modeling skill. It does not need to be too practical as long as it can safely be used if it were real.

Clock
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The clock is one of the oldest human inventions, meeting the need to consistently measure intervals of time shorter than the natural units: the day; the lunar month; and the year. Devices operating on several different physical processes have been used over the millennia, culminating in the clocks of today.
In this challenge, you are to model a wall clock of an existing design or one of your own creation. You may use any type of movement you like as long as the clock mounts to a wall and does not touch the floor.

Board game

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A board game is a game that involves counters or pieces moved or placed on a pre-marked surface or "board", according to a set of rules. Games can be based on pure strategy, chance (e.g. rolling dice) or a mixture of the two, and usually have a goal that a player aims to achieve. Early board games represented a battle between two armies, and most current board games are still based on defeating opposing players in terms of counters, winning position or accrual of points (often expressed as in-game currency).
For the purposes of this challenge you are free to design and model any type of board game you choose. Also, remember to make every piece needed for the game because nobody likes to pull a board game out of the closet only to find some of the key parts required by the game missing and spoiling the evening...

SketchUp 3D Challenge #180 - Refrigerators

Thursday, 27 June 2013 - Monday, 08 July 2013

While you are trying to stay cool this summer with your ice cream and your ice pops, you are going to need a way to keep those treats fresh and, even more importantly, frozen. The only way to do that is with refrigeration unless somehow you have figured out how to source enough ice to do the job. Except, that's thing; that ice was also frozen using refrigeration. So there is no way around it, you need a fridge...

For the purposes of this challenge, you must model a home refrigerator. It can be of any design you like, any size or shape, no matter how unexpected it is.

SketchUp 3D Challenge #179 - Human Powered Vehicle

Monday, 17 June 2013 - Thursday, 27, 2013

Human powered vehicles are some of the most basic forms of transportation that we see everywhere we go. Some have been reduced to a novelty of the past while others continue to be used despite modern advancements in technology. These vehicles are not limited to operating on land as they also can be found in water and in more rare circumstances, in the air. Believe it or not, even submarines and experiential helicopters have been human powered although their success has been fairly limited.

For the purposes of this challenge, your entry must be powered solely by the human body as its means of propulsion and control. Human powered air and sea vehicles cannot use sails or any other means to aid in propulsion other than wings that generate lift and it must still work without the aid of wind. On land, gravity may assist but cannot be relied upon for propulsion. In other words, if it is on flat ground it must still work.

Thursday, 06 June 2013 - Monday, 17 June 2013

Without farm equipment, a lot of the food we depend on and enjoy would be hard to come by and even more expensive than it already is. There are many categories of farm equipment each performing specific tasks for every crop including traction and power, soil cultivation, planting, fertilizing & pest control, irrigation, produce sorting, harvesting, hay making, and loading,

In this challenge you are free to model any type of equipment used on a farm you choose as long as it performs a task in farming.
