3D Challenge #031 - Aircraft carrier
Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.
This week's challenge:
Aircraft carrier
This week we are going to model the Navy's sea-going airbase, also known as the aircraft carrier. These warships are designed to deploy air power in remote zones without the need of local bases. In the beginning they were made from wood and used hot air ballons with boms attached to attack the enemy. The current versions are from high strength steel, powered by nucleair energy and with all kinds of aircrafts at their disposal. For this challenge there are no restictions to your imagination. You could create a historic carrier, a future carrier or a carrier only suitable for helicopters for example. The challenge, for this rather large subject, is of course the hull of the ship and the efficiency in geometry and filesize of your model.
Good luck ALL!

From this challenge and in the future, there will no obligation for a blog entry anymore. It is still allowed to post a link to your model or additional images, but it is not required anymore to submit a model to the challenges. The 3D Warehouse tag is still required though and should be added when uploading a model to the Warehouse.
ReplyDeleteYou can use the hyperlink code creater on the frontpage of the blog to create the code for a hyperlink in your message. Copy this code and paste it in the comment box on the place where your want the hyperlink to be.
Challenge suggestions are welcome to be placed on the blog. Items will be noted and compiled on the moderator’s list. At that point, the initial comment for the suggestion may be deleted so as to maintain a streamline challenge thread for use of posting entries for the challenge and comments to models. Challenge suggestions have always been welcomed and taken under consideration.
Good luck with the challenge...
im planning on making a aircraft carrier transformer. like...a big dude...
ReplyDeleteHello mr.jumpman v.2,
ReplyDeleteEverytime I read these kind of messages from you on the blog and the warehouse, I ask myself why you are participating with these challenges? Why do you want to turn every subject into a robot or a mech? The main reason for the various subjects is that with every subject you will be confronted with new modeling problems. The learning proces starts when you deal with those problems and try to find a solution for it. When you make the same kind of models over and over again (like a mech in your case) you avoid these modeling problems and hold the learning proces. In my opinion this makes participating with these challenges useless. I understand that you fancy robots, but I think that you can do way better then what you show. I would like to see a model from you where you deal with the real problems of the subject given. For this challenge that would be the curved shapes of the hull. Obviously this is your own choice, I don't want to force you to do so. Just considering my words is enough for me.
Anyway, good luck with the challenge.

Note: This is my personal opinion not acting as a mod or on behalve of the mod-team.
To the Mod-team!
ReplyDeleteHey you guys, first of all, you're doing a great job with a lot of commitment. If i speak for myself, i appriciate it very much!
Let people like Jumpman buils all the guns they want, no problem...there are still a lot nice things or ideas that we can get out of them, personaly i think it's quitte funny, having some kind of trigger-happy-builder (no offence to you mr.jumpman, really!)
It's up to deside to the mod-team, what models are acceptable, in terms of challenge-requirements.
I had some disappointments on this subject before, like the lifeboat challenge. It's not ness. the way that people cheat the voting, it's also the way that these models are found good enough by the mod-team to be legal winners. That's what i ment with setting a minimum quality-demand on models. And you're the once in charge, remember! If you don't think it's good enough, i'll will trust on YOUR judgement in terms of model-qualifying. Let people try harder ;) This is a "serious" challenge, so keep up the good work, and overrule voting for models that don't stand up by the challenge! Kind regards, ALX
(you're the ONES) ;) my poor englisch...once :'(
ReplyDeleteAwww... ill stop making dumb mechs... )= but im still gonna make that transformer thing cause thats something ive wanted to make. but ill make something for the challenge actualy usefull... thx jman ( wow i just notice that j-man = jump man lol anyways ) for the suggestion. a large request is for you to make a mech challenge so i have a totaly unfare advantage of the hole warehouse knowing i make mechs =p. now to work on that Non- mech aircraft carrier
ReplyDeleteoh and the reason i do it is cause my nearly first model. you guessed it. it was a mech. around the first four i made were mechs actualy. and i may have made my name +-Go mechs!-+ but serriosly ill stop making mechs unless its something ivolved in destruction like war model or giant gun ( but serriosly no more mechs for me in peacfull areas ) Go mechs!!! mr.jumpman v.2
ReplyDeleteHello mr.jumpman v.2,
ReplyDeleteI don't think your mechs are dumb and I surely don't want you to stop making them. My "problem" was that there is no use of giving a subject if people make something completely different everytime. I personally draw a line where the challenge subject becomes a minor part of the model. So, keep making the mechs as a side project and try to stick a bit more to subject for the challenges (within the given creative boundaries). I'll add the mech subject to the list for the new subject polls, it could be a fun challenge. You'll see it soon in the list if you promise not to cheat the poll ;).
Ok, back to the challenge again. Here are some images of a carrier I've been working on. It's a carrier with two runways, based on the concept of a catamaran (original idea by Falcon10). The line running over the axis of the ship is from the components. It will be hidden when the model is finished, for now still a WIP.
View the album here.
Without the airplanes the models file size is 2,34MB and with the airplanes 3,53MB.

aww man thats freakin sick... can i use my pre made jets and jetocs and helicopters ( if i have any helis ) and ill promise to not cheat for the polls as long as you add the mech poll ( or if you were asking for me not to cheat on the voitng for that cahllenge ok that to, although i dont even know how i would but ok ) thats the most awsome aircraft carrier ive seen defenitly got my vote. two more questions when you say 2,00 mb does that mean like 200 mb or 2.00 mb cause 200mb is alot... other question is does it have to be in water? can it be a air-aircraft carrier? mr. jumpman v.2

@ mr.jumpman: as long as it carries aircraft, imho, an aerial aircraft carrier might be a very interesting idea and I'd like to see it implemented.
ReplyDelete@ j-m@n: wow, dude! that model is nothing short of amazing. great work!
@J-man
ReplyDeleteGreat and impressive job! Excellent
In the Netherlands we use the comma as the symbol voor the decimals. In this case the model of the carrier without the airplanes is 2MB and 340KB.
ReplyDeleteThanks for granting me the voting points, but this model won't be in the list. Generally the mod team decided not to put our own models in the voting list although we do make models for challenges. A second reason is that I started with this model before the idea of an aircraft carrier challenge was used in the poll. This would be unfair to other participants who only got a week for the carrier. I posted it to show the possibilities of sketchup for this challenge. The time spent on this model was about 8 hours so far.

ReplyDeleteHi everyone,
ReplyDeletehere is my model coming. Its an aerial aircraft carrier.
And for everybody who wants some inspiration: here are the plans of the nextgen aircraftcarriers: cvx
Wow, some fantastic models have been entered this week, as they are every week! And j-m@n, ridiculous model. It's astounding. I can't wait to see the finished product.

I thick Aircraft Carriers might look cool steathyish...
ReplyDeleteDoes the Enterprise-E count as an aircraft carrier? After all, it does have shuttle bays...

ReplyDeleteOkay, I'll submit it:
ReplyDeleteThe Enterprise-E
Hello all,
ReplyDeleteAlthough my carrier is still a WIP I already uploaded the progress so far for viewing. As usual this will not be a submission to the challenge. Unfortunately the airplanes had to be purged as they were from the formfonts website (for main dimensions and organization of ship parts). These models are not free to spread, so they had to be deleted.

My model disappeared!! Maybe it will come back up... It was there 5 minutes ago, now gone!? I wont be able to re-upload again until tonight so I hope I don't miss the deadline...
ReplyDelete@Chris Bence: If you refer to your USS Invincible* model, I can still see it as a valid submission.
ReplyDelete@Admiral Kamikaze Bacon: The mod team discussed your enterprise model and concluded it is to much off-topic for this challenge. Although it's a very nice model, the main purpose of the ship is not to lauch aircrafts but to explore space. Keep making models of this quality, but try to stick a bit more to the challenge subject. We hope to see more models from you in future challenges.
@All: We see more and more models which are using standard components from the sketchup library, like the "SimpleDome02" component for example. The main rules of the challenges state that these parts also have to be created by yourself.
J-m@n
Never mind... Its back. That was strange!
ReplyDeleteBut while I'm here, can someone rate my model so I know how I'm doing?
Hello chris,
ReplyDeleteHere's a short review of your USS Invincible* model. First of all I would like to say that you created quite a nice model. You are one of the people who took the challenge to create a smoothed hull and succeeded in keeping the filesize relative low. You also used components, a home scene and purged the model.
Of course there are also some things you could improve in future models, here are a few:
- First of all the reversed faces (the blue/purple faces when viewed in monochrome mode). Some parts of the hull have faces which should have been reversed. When the hull is already smoothed you can reverse single faces by turning on hidden geometry mode. The same thing happened in the gun turret component, the "meatball" (landing
guide lights) and some parts of the flightdeck and tower.
- You could have used fewer edges on some parts of your model. The gun turret uses 12 sides for the top and 24 for the barrel while it could do with less. In this case it's not a disaster, but when you are going to add lots of detail to your model it will become important. The radar component is also an example which could do with less faces and the chamfered edgesof the tower could use some more, especially at the roof. Try to balance this number of edges a bit more to the size of the object. I understand that for the tower you just extruded the bottom shape where you used 3 edges.
- The back part of the tower has some edges which are not smoothed while they are at the front. Try to do this directly after you created the geometry so you won't forget in the end.
- The hull and tower does contain some inside faces which are not visible and don't have any funtion. Try to delete these faces to keep your model as clean as possible.
- Further there are some minor things like left over lines (1. hide the deck group and hull components, 2. four lines below the tower in the deck group, 3. some lines inside the tower group), the top of the bow has a few hidden lines to much and the bottom face of the tower could be deleted to prevent z-fighting.
I hope you can do something with these remarks in your future models,
Good luck
J-m@n
Thanks j-m@n. I got very sloppy towards the end of the model in my rush to get it done... Which is pretty much why I was so inconsistent with the number of entities in curves and the surface directions. It certainly doesn't make any sense that i'd have only 3 edges on the tower but 12 on a tiny cannon! Rookie mistakes!! :)
ReplyDeleteI should have taken the time to clean up those lines and extra surfaces, thanks to your help I'll be much more cautious next time.
