3D Challenge #025 - Lawn mower

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

Lawn mower

This week we will do a bit of gardening by creating our very own lawn mower. The first lawn mower was invented by English engineer Edwin Beard Budding in 1827 as a superior alternative to the scythe. These lawn mowers where man powered until the 1930s, when Power Specialties Ltd. introduced a gasoline-powered rotary mower. Later the electric powered lawn mowers were introduced beside the gasoline powered mowers. For this challenge, all types of lawn mowers are allowed (reel mowers, rotary mowers, riding mowers, hover mowers, robotic mowers, professional mowers, etc.), including mowers of your own design.

Good luck ALL!

  13. This is my entry for the SketchUp 3d Lawn Mower Challenge! It evolved from a single knife to an array of knives. When combined with two wheels you'll get the perfect Lawn Mower! Maybe someday in the future it will be possible to combine this with a new invention, called steam-engines....

  14. This is only my second challenge, but there's something that i noticed.
    Most reactions are like this:
"looks great check out my models"
    "remember me nice model"
    "Rate my models!"
Of course it is nice if people are positive;) But it is even better if there is some critisism. There is always room for improvement. So i would like to see better reviews of models. In this way the models will become better!

If you are negative about a model, don't be afraid that your own model won't be rated! A honest opinion will be appreciated!

I'm curious about your opinions about this subject!

  15. Hi Ruud,

I totally agree with your statement about the ratings. Indeed it's nice to get good ratings but on the other hand they have little value without a proper explanation. It doesn't really matter if this is a positive or a negative reaction, both ways you can learn from it. If you can't or don't want to give an explanation of your rating, I think you better shouldn't rate the model at all. Often the ratings on the warehouse say more about the person who rates then they do about the model. I personally can't do anything with ratings where people almost beg to view or rate their models. In my eyes this is nothing more then a way of getting publicity or spreading their own name. These ratings doesn't help the modeler who gets the rating in any way. The same for ratings that only judge the subject of the model. There are lots of people only giving a bad or good rating because they don't or do like a specific brand or object. Again the modeler can't do anything with these ratings.

For these challenges I often don't rate at all, although I do have an opinion about every model. There are several reasons for this; I would like to stay neutral (If I give comments to a specific modeler then why not to others?) and I can exaggerate a bit to much sometimes (as I'm a perfectionist myself). Instead of giving comments, I created the MCM-tutorial based on mistakes we often see in models for the challenges. This tutorial contains many things I check when reviewing a model, compared to the overall complexity of the model.

  21. J-M@N HELP!

    I've got the following problem;

i try to rate other models, but google keeps refering that i have to sign in to the 3d warehouse, even though i'm already signed up!

?!? Do you know how to fix this?
I agree with you and ruud, rating shoukd be seen as a positive feedback, all challengers should do it!

  22. Can we vote early and vote often here. I just tried voting again to see if I could and it seems to have worked. Are there any controls on this?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hello DesignsbyALX,

Sorry for my late response, I guess I missed your message. I had exactly the same problem yesterday when I was trying to rate a model. If I remember right, it happened before and is related to warehouse maintenance. There's nothing you can really do about it, other then wait until it's fixed.

@SchreiberBike: Normally you should only be able to vote once. But, because of the lack of proper security and control over the poll, you sometimes can vote multiple times. Until Google expands the poll functionality we can only hope that everybody is honost enought to vote once (on somebody elses model). If you win because you voted multiple times for your own model, then it's nothing more then a fake victory.
