3D Challenge #046 - Communication Antenna
Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.
This week's challenge:
Communication Antenna
The communication Antenna has been almost a necessity to us and has played a major role in creating what is known as the "Global Village." These antennae may be used for Cell Phones, Radio Stations, and Television Broadcast. There are also different types of communication antennae. There are the High-gain and Low-gain which are determined by the width of the beam produced. No matter the type or style, these may becoming extinct due to satellite communication, which do use their own type of antenna. (Please do not model a satellite)
Have fun with this one!

From this challenge and in the future, there will no obligation for a blog entry anymore. It is still allowed to post a link to your model or additional images, but it is not required anymore to submit a model to the challenges. The 3D Warehouse tag is still required though and should be added when uploading a model to the Warehouse.
ReplyDeleteYou can use the hyperlink code creator on the frontpage of the blog to create the code for a hyperlink in your message. Copy this code and paste it in the comment box on the place where your want the hyperlink to be.
Challenge suggestions are welcome to be placed on the blog. Items will be noted and compiled on the moderator’s list. At that point, the initial comment for the suggestion may be deleted so as to maintain a streamline challenge thread for use of posting entries for the challenge and comments to models. Challenge suggestions have always been welcomed and taken under consideration.
**Please refrain from using background images for future challenges.
Good luck with the challenge!
wow, nice challenge choices for the next one guys, thx.

Great title and ideal for future development and inventor of Communication Antenna!
ReplyDeleteGood Luck to all challenger!
@ Google CEO
ReplyDeletePlease give different names to your models, otherwise there could be probloms in the voting system.
You can change the name directly from the Warehouse
Thanks.
Jumpman, if you don't like the topics for the next challenge, then please, suggest something! New ideas are always welcome. When I say New, I mean new, completely different ideas, not a mech lamp, or mech pencil.
ReplyDeleteThrow some ideas this way and I'll make sure one gets in the poll next week!
Just for some feedback, does everyone feel this way about the topic choices? What do people want to model? We just pick from a large list of ideas and try to get some large/small diversity.

ok, i'd like to have a magnum for the next challenge ( i also love chess, maybe we could do another chess challenge? )
ReplyDeletealso, what about a motorcycle, there were a couple people wanting to do a motorcycle earlier.
mr.jumpman v.2
Magnum as in the Gun or the vehicle?
ReplyDeleteMotorcycle is a good one, I'll make sure that is in the next poll.
As for chess, it has been done twice now, so it should probably be given some more time before it is used again.
Thanks for the suggestions though!
-LoganC-
Yes a motorcycle!! I can't wait!!

ReplyDeleteif you are taking suggestions how about a aqua duct or a dam
ReplyDelete(cloudedzero)
I'm not familiar with the name aqua duct. Is it similar to a dam?
ReplyDelete-LoganC-
Hi Logan.
ReplyDeleteGoogle by images the words" aqua duct" and you'll see what they were.
The most famous were made by Romans and ruins are all over Europe.
yeh, u shud do a magnum (the gun).
ReplyDeleteyea i meant the gun magnum, im gonna make a 357 if it passes the vote =p ( Go 357s!!! )
ReplyDeleteyea aqua ducts is that giant thing in...rome? that looks like a bridge getting smaller and smaller every level. ( just search is on none other than google )
I didnt know there ware already two chess challenges... what about a physics challenge? like ya know? sketchyphysics. just a thought, may not work cause not everyone has it.
@ Mr. Jumpman
ReplyDeleteWhat you've seen is the Colosseo in Rome and it's not an aqua duct. It's a theater like the Arena in Verona.
The aqua duct were made to "transport" water (aqua) form a place to another.
A well-known aqua duct is in Segovia (near Madrid in Spain) It was constructed by the romans 2000 years ago to transport water to the city. You can see photographs in Google by images.
ReplyDeleteGuys, i have a request , you should allow the use of the "default shapes " components built into sketchup since they save time, i mean any one can construct a dome or cone , but to save time why not just import it from the default components
ReplyDeletemost of us are so good we make are own parts...

I couldn't resist this challenge... since I work in the telecommunications industry and part of my job is climbing telecom towers for maintenance inspections.
ReplyDeleteMonopole Tower Model
the correct term is aqueduct spelling error on my behalf and yes they are "HUGE" actually they are bigger than dams
ReplyDeletean aqueduct in kavala it actually splits the town
kaval aqueduct
and also how about a toy open challenge
design your own toy!
(cloudedzero)
What about some prize dudes?? I dont mean ipods or iphones but hows about a nice little certificate (online that is ) as enticement and increaseing the competition ( not that im saying there's no dearth of competition :) )
ReplyDeletesorry i meant there is no dearth of competition :)
ReplyDeletei have a request that you do a "Space to Ground Cannon"
ReplyDeleteheres an example
ion cannon
this ones not so good lookin, you get the idea
how bout a wooden bridge?
ReplyDeleteIt has been many moons since I have participated in a challenge, but I like the wooden bridge idea, as well as the motorcycle. I don't think I would be very good with a gun, but how about amunition (bullets, grenades, missiles, ect...). And instead of a car or a motorcycle, how about a component such as the engine or braking system or something along those lines.
ReplyDeleteJumperman, if you are looking to get into sketchy physics challenges they have started one similar to this one at http://sketchyphysicschallenge.blogspot.com/

ReplyDeleteI have an idea to throw out there.
ReplyDeleteSince this is a modeling challenge, I'd suggest that we have challenges that further enhance our modeling skills. I don't know if this is completely possible given the current peer-rating system, but I was thinking about adding "best use of layers" or "best use of nested components" to the mix. Of course, everyone would still be modeling the same object, that wouldn't change, but there would be some stricter rules as to how that model should be built.
The reason I say it may not be possible with the current voting system is that is would take some time and effort to vote on... you couldn't just go for the most detailed or the coolest looking thumbnail. They would need to be "properly" judged.
Before this blog, when the 3D challenge was in the Google Forums, there were suggestions of restricting the dimensional sizes of models, doing models with no color or textures, competitions where everyone gets the same JPG of something to model, stuff like that.
Just a thought!
If you're taking suggestions, why not something useful to Google, like a town?
ReplyDeleteis it possible to have more or less optons for a "next challenge" voting?
ReplyDeletemr.jumpman v.2
A town would be interesting and fun, but could take longer than a week to model. I believe that Google has a Model A City deal going on at the Warehouse website anyway.
ReplyDeleteI think we should go with smaller items that we can make ultra detailed. Something like spark plugs, a bottle cap, etc...
How about modeling a completely new product that could conceivably be used practically in today's economy. A new invention if you will. Modelers for that challenge could be judged for creativity, and usefulness of the product.
Just a thought.

I have a fantastic joke entry planned out if we do the Magnum challenge... Its gunna be great! :)
