3D Challenge #044 - City Entrance Gate

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

City Entrance Gate

This weeks challenge is to model an entrance gate to a city. There are many different styles and materials used in these gates and can range from being built just recently as a memorial, or can even date back several hundred years. Some of the more famous entrance gates are made from stone and contain elaborate designs and symbols that have meaning to the city. These are typically connected to a bordering wall and were made several centuries ago. These are just some examples, but be creative. Your model does not necessarily have to be made after an existing gate. It, like other challenges, can be totally made from imagination, and imagination is encouraged!

Have fun and good luck!

  1. General notes:

From this challenge and in the future, there will no obligation for a blog entry anymore. It is still allowed to post a link to your model or additional images, but it is not required anymore to submit a model to the challenges. The 3D Warehouse tag is still required though and should be added when uploading a model to the Warehouse.

You can use the hyperlink code creator on the frontpage of the blog to create the code for a hyperlink in your message. Copy this code and paste it in the comment box on the place where your want the hyperlink to be.

Challenge suggestions are welcome to be placed on the blog. Items will be noted and compiled on the moderator’s list. At that point, the initial comment for the suggestion may be deleted so as to maintain a streamline challenge thread for use of posting entries for the challenge and comments to models. Challenge suggestions have always been welcomed and taken under consideration.

    Good luck with the challenge!

  2. Good luck to you all in this fine challenge!

    Just remember one thing:

  3. GENERAL NOTES TO THE CHALLENGE:
    @ Benjamin
Please remove the tags of the challenges from your "TOSHIBA and CXS". It could not be part of the challenged models.

    @Nightshade
I think this time you have gone out of topic. The STARgate is a kind of space/time travelling machine. The CITYgate should be a sort of architectural thing that opens the route to the city.
    Please remove the model.

    @ Everyone
Please use unique names for your models. In the last challenge Mr. Planet use 3 times the name "tank" to identify his models. this cause problems with the voting poll system.
    Thanks

Last thing. I've uploaded the model "Aquarius tank" under the Username su3Dchallenge@gmail.com. The model was made by VictoryRock who has some problems to upload it

  4. I forgot, are you an admin COSIDEMARCO? You're starting to right like "THEM".

and could i make some kind of Sci-Fi game? im no good at making real stuff with that intence detail in one component. I've tried multiple times and failed to make a good and real model. That's why no ones ever seen anything non-fiction from me.

  5. @ Jumpman V2
Yes, I'm part of the Moderators Team.
And yes again, (read challenge intro) you can model something immaginary. It has only to conduce to a city.

Otherwise you could try to model a real Gate; remember that the purpose of these challenges is to improve skills and learn something new. Doing the same stuffs everytime brings nothing new.

  6. Ok, I removed the stargate from the challenge.

  7. @Mr. Jumpman

Although it is a fine looking model, the boundary of the challenge has been exceeded. The challenge is City Entrance Gate and not earth entrance. I ask you kindly to remove the tags from the model as it does not fit the challenge guidelines. Nightshade was also asked to remove his model as it was a portal entrance and again not within the guidelines. He did comply and hope he enters another into the challenge.

    Thanks

Although it is undeniable that making your model must have been a painstaking effort on your behalf, we all must abide by the Challenge's rules. Furthermore, after nightshade agreed to remove his/her model from the competition, it would be definitely unfair if we make an exception for your own model. I hope that you understand.

  10. I don't mind if you leave his model in, just as long as I can enter my stargate again. It does lead to a city...

    ReplyDelete
  11. @ mr. Jumpman & nightshade
Sorry guys, but your models are not exactly a CITY gate.
Try to google "city gates" by images to inspire yourself for a new model.

    @ Morls7
Sorry again but your models can be accepted. they were made before the Challenge started. Models must be made explict for the challenge.

Please, read guidelines and the Partecipation manual.

  12. Hi all Ok let me just say that I'm not very good with building of any kind witch is why i usually stay away from these things so I'll say this the scale is out there if it were real it would me 10 stories tall kind of big for a city gate but i posted anyway

    ReplyDelete
  13. sigh....

can i keep it on a little longer?
and the earth is a whol city so it technicly is a "city" gate

  14. Mr.jumpman,
You really do need to remove your model from the challenge. It's a great model, but just doesn't fit in with the guidelines. It's not like you have to delete it from your account and that all your work was for nothing. Just remove the 3d challenge tag, that way it is still on the warehouse for many people to enjoy! You should be proud of your model and not worry about it being in the challenge. These challenges are about learning and having fun. There have been many people to make models for the challenges as a sort of joke model, but they don't enter them. They do it just for fun.
So please understand that as good as your model is, it cannot be accepted. We can not make exceptions as that would lead to more bending of the guidelines.
    Thanks for your understanding,
    mods

  15. My city entrance gate (not up yet) is a Bridge; but since it's a covered bridge, that looks kind of like a glass tunnel, is it acceptable? it is a city "entrance/exit", and according to the Oxford english dictionary, would qualify.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh, Mr. Jump Man V.2? Why not just re-post your model with a "City" background, and post it as a kind of futuristic city gate, instead of an earth gate?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes sir.

and ill just do what btm did and if you say yes ill reput the tag on

its removed, sorry for the squirming around. ( thx btm )

  18. id like to request to have a chain saw for the next challenge voting. NOT A KILLER CHAINSAW!

    mr.jumpman v.2

    ReplyDelete
  19. would request "irregularly shaped building" as a chalenge. (office/apartment building, museum, or anything like that would be good too.)

    ReplyDelete
  20. This has nothing to do with anything that's happened yet, but just a "what if?". The way the voting is set up, couldn't someone just go on a number of different computers and vote for their own model? if this is the case, it's not a fair way to set up a voting pole... I guess you could have it so it's 1 vote per account, but then people would just make several accounts, and everyone would need an account... anyways, delete this post if you like, this just popped into my head.

  21. ok my gate is now a entrance to a city cause i changed the back ground. the first picture is the same its just a glitch, i actualy changed the model. this, from what i know, is following all the guidlines. ( thank you btm for the idea )

    mr.jumpman v.2

    ReplyDelete
  22. wait- can i do the same to my entry?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Can we have a humanoid robot on the next poll for the next model?

    ReplyDelete
  24. nightshade, my model is fictonal and it floats, it also doesnt transport things. so i doubt the stargate would be liable.

    mr.jumpman v.2

  25. I'll sum up what Mr. jump man said, in a more understandable way: his model was a gate. He just changed it from an outer space gate to a city gate. Your model is a teleporter, not a gate OR entrance, so I don't think it would be accepted. I'm not a moderator though, so I wouldn't know...

  26. Challenge Suggestion:
Famous TV Sitcom House - I would recommend this be a special month long challenge to give us time to build and fully furnish the model inside and out. I've already modeled my own home so I got the idea to make an attempt at a fictional home.

  28. Hello everyone!the one and only Benjamin is here! And sorry about the Toshiba and CXS model, don't mean to brag about it but i'm only 10-15(can't give out exact age), its true!I started sketchup few years back when they use Sketchup5.BY the way, good luck on the models everyone,I had to think hard for this....but i made it anyway...

  29. future challenge topic:

  31. Sorry guys but today we have to give a bad nes for 4 of you.
After a pair of days of discussions we have decided to not admit in the challege these models:

    - city gate of future city by Benjamin:
Its a portal, not a gate.

    - Narnian Style Gate by Sketch (>'.')>:
    Another portal.

    - Waterfall bridge by •BTM :
A bridge is not exactly a gateway. It simply connect the two sides of a river, not a city

    - City-44 Floating entrance Gate by Mr. Jumpman:
To place a jpeg of a city behind it, does not make it a gate entrance.
Still not what the challenge was suggesting.

Important, someone has already another model in the challenge but you still have 2 days to model a new one if you wish.

  33. my model does go through al the rules, it has to be an entrance to a gate, its creative. it never said if it floats or theres a picture that its not liable. can you please explain? what about benjamin's gate of peace? it has a picture in the background ( and its not even a entrance to a city ) and benjamins gate of the future isn't a portal its just closed at the moment.

i'd like you to explain some of these things

    mr.jumpman v.2

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Mr. Jumpman
The gates not mentioned in my previous post are Ok. They were made with the idea of a gate. Your model was thought as a space portal to a planet (not exactly a city even if it could be Trantor). Changing background leaves the model exactly as the original one. and the background would not be considered in the valutation.
We have also banned Waterfall Bridge by •BTM ' cause it is a "bridge" like the name itself explain.

Look out your window, you have plenty of idea outside your home, take one and create a new model.
Sometimes there is more than Sci-Fi ;)

  35. @ mr.jumpman v.2 (et al)

My friend, to provide a friendly competition environment that allows individual modelers to improve their own "sketchuppin" skills is one of the main goals of the Google Sketchup Challenge. We try to set different topics for each new weekly Challenge, in order to "challenge" modelers to try new things every time; to polish their abilities in areas where they don't particularly excel. What would be challenging to a sketchupper if week after week we give him/her a new assignment that does not push the boundaries of his/her own skills any further? If you are good at, say, modeling mechs or sci-fi stuff, you may never improve in other areas: creativity, precise and accurate rendering of actual (as opposed to imaginary) subjects, organic modeling, etc.

The mod team ponders carefully each and every issue that is brought to our attention by you, the users, and we always strive to arrive at the fairest possible solutions. We have decided that the models listed above by Cosedimarco will be voided and excluded from this challenge, since they don't fit the criteria as it was specified by LoganC at the start of this Challenge. Our decission in this case is final. Please try to understand and refrain from trying to "flog a dead horse" in what regards this particular matter.

  36. cosedemarco-

the model has always been a gate to a city, just when it was in space the city is bigger. it was "NEVER"-"EVER" a portal or teleporter, it was simply a gate to a city, its more of a border gate, but it qualifies, if you dis-agree i have already removedit from the challenge. i dont see whats wrong with it, but you guys say its not valid sooooo. yea.

    oscar-

i promise after the next challenge ill make something less origanel to my own skills.

    Here's the gallery as well.

  38. 'm not going to argue for my model, if it's a bridge, it's a bridge. But Mr. jump man's model Is a gate, he just changed WHERE it was. NOW it's a city gate; not an earth gate. If it IS a city gate, I don't see how you could keep it from the challenge.

    ReplyDelete
  39. BTM and Jumpman, I think the mods are trying to make a point here. When they set a challenge for the week, they want people to follow it closely. For example, if they set a challenge for a coffee mug and we post a mechanized tank with a cup on the roof, its kind of defeating the point... (even if you could put coffee in it) Sorry to pick on you Jumpman!! :) I respect the hell out of your modelling skills, I'm just trying to help clarify the situation.

    Dont hate me! :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. When I said use your imagination and creativity in the description, I mean don't feel like you have to model a specific gate. Use free-form shapes, just make it up as you go imagination, not floating gates and space portals imagination.
Sorry, but sometimes we just have to stick to the basic boundaries of the topics.
