3D Challenge #051 - Space Docking Harbor

Note:
The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.
Before you start modeling and posting, please read carefully the 3D Challenge participating manual and pre-made or downloaded components are not allowed.

This week's challenge:

Space Docking Harbor

This weeks challenge is back to a space/sci-fi theme. You are to model a docking harbor for space crafts and units that wish to "park" their vessels. There is no limit to the size or capacity of the harbor, we only ask you that it will allow at least one vessel to dock at a port on in your harbor. Anything and everything else is left up to the designer.

Good luck and have fun!

  1. General Notes:
There will no obligation for a blog entry anymore. It is still allowed to post a link to your model or additional images, but it is not required anymore to submit a model to the challenges. The 3D Warehouse tag is still required though and should be added when uploading a model to the Warehouse.

You can use the hyperlink code creator on the frontpage of the blog to create the code for a hyperlink in your message. Copy this code and paste it in the comment box on the place where your want the hyperlink to be.

Challenge suggestions are welcome to be placed on the blog. Items will be noted and compiled on the moderator’s list. At that point, the initial comment for the suggestion may be deleted so as to maintain a streamline challenge thread for use of posting entries for the challenge and comments to models. Challenge suggestions have always been welcomed and taken under consideration.

Please refrain from using background images in your models as it is the model itself that is being judged.

You'll notice a new link on the main page that directs you to the First Place Certificate area to which winners are able to print a certificate with a picture of their model detailing their excellence. You can access the page here or through the main page of the blog.

    HAVE FUN!

  3. I was surfing the net and came across an article where a company will be sending items into space. The items are the size of a coke can. I though this might be an idea for a challenge.

Make an item, that fits the size of a coke can, that you would like to send to space. For instance, a satalite that folds up into the determined size. If you are interested, the link is: Space Can

  5. @the creator
When I use a background picture, the way I do it is go into the styles window. window>styles
Then I edit the current style. Then click the "water mark settings" box. (It's the picture of a cube with "o.k." in front of it) Then click the "+" button. From there you can choose your image and then set it as background. The rest of the settings are up to you.
I would like to remind you though, that it would be best if you did not use a background for your challenge model. The judging is of the models, not the backgrounds.
    Have fun!

  7. @ Skaker

You can but remember 2 things:
    1) Space ship must be an original model, not taken from your collections or th WH, but made for this challenge.
    2) Tha main scope of the challenge is the Harbour and NOT the ship.

    Good luck!

I think this time everything is clear.
From the main page"docking harbor for space crafts and units that wish to "park" their vessels. [...] we only ask you that it will allow at least one vessel to dock at a port on in your harbor".
No hotel or cargo carrier (this was one of the past challenge) are mentioned.
the challeng is a place where space ship can dock, upload/unload their stuff, repair parts, etc...

The challenge is the harbor not the vessels...

  11. @ Mr Jumpman
It looks like a space ship and not a space station.
Sorry but model can't be accepted.
You can take a look at other modellers to take inspiration about station.

In Mr.Jumpmans defence, it sounds to be more of a mobile transporter. Which has a requirement for ships to be "parked" there to be transported.

The mobility was never mentioned in the rules neither was the shape.

Although it doesn't really worry me, I think that his model is in keeping with the requirements and should be accepted.

A mobile Transportation is not exactly an harbor. Most of the time harbor are stationary and not mobile. It seemed to me the model of Mr. Jumpman was more a spaceship rathetr than a Station.

My personal idea of a Space harbor is the "2001: a Space Odyssey" Station and not the Star Destroyer in "Star Wars" saga, even both can carry and "park" ship inside themselves.

I Know, we are still borderline with definitions but it seem that most of you well understood what was the current theme of the challenge.

Before the end of the challenge I'd like to read opinions from users about this model.

  14. A dock/harbour/harbor is usually stationary. I like how mr.jumpman v.2 is thinking outside the box.

I actually pondered with the idea of a space station that had warp gates gates that allowed ships to dock and be able to transport them to another location but I thought that it would not count as it is a transportation device so I did not continue with that idea. A harbor unfortunately is stationary or would follow an orbital rotation. mr.jumpman v.2's model is for transportation not to harbor/dock/harbour but to move ships from one location to another via warp travel.

In other words it is like a car train, it loads on a dock travels to another dock and unloads sorry.
I actually like the model it is very thought out but it is not a dock/harbor/harbour.

He can still keep it in the challenge area to help others with ideas but it is not a harbor just a crago ship that hauls other ships that are not capable of warp or even trans warp.

  15. sorry for confusiion, how do you expect the station to get in space? its much easier to jet it out there with rockets, just think of them as "temporary Rcokets" and it doesnt matter what the sahpe is, the picture just shows the top closer instead of what it really is. And i really dont want another waisted good model that didnt make it through the challenge, it may be my last challenge model if so.

  16. @ Mr. Jumpman
-How to get into space: Piece by piece. It's quite impossible to lauch from the Earth a full Space Station, due to gravity problems.
If you have normal engine you should waste an incredible quantity of fuel, if it's free (and it never will be) no matter how many voyages you have to do to built the Space station.

I take a close look at your model and it is a spaceship.

I will repeat again: Battlestar Galactica is a space ship, Deep Space Nine is a space station.

I agree with Crazy Eyes post, your model could not enter the challenge.

  17. Entry: Melrek's Spaceport
Here is my space docking harbor. Melrek's Spaceport is inspired by the drive-in diners from the 50's an 60's. I based the design on the "Mel's Drive-In" restaurant at Universal Studios.

  18. Mr. Jumpman V.2, since you're such a fast modeler, why not just make something else? Or just remove the thrusters and replace them with docking ports?

  19. last time i edited a model that was entered in a challenge it still was not accepted, besides i only have 2 hours left.

i will remove my space station at once...

  20. i wanna make a mech now...

can you do a challenge for that?

  21. When do we get to start voting on upcoming challenges again? It seemed to me that challenges got posted much sooner when it was done tha way. Also, to me, it seemed more fun knowing what the options were because I could anticipate what I might be modeling.

  22. That's why we did not have a topic poll for a while, because people were modeling before the start time. Which is technically not allowed as each model must be made for the challenge AND must be modeled in the time frame, though we have been letting it go for a while now.
I'll put a poll up this time though, for a challenge next week.
