3D Challenge #027 - Next generation space shuttle

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

Next generation space shuttle

The space shuttle, or Space Transportation System, was designed in the seventies and had it's maiden flight in 1981. It was the first spacecraft designed for partial reusability instead of the rockets which could only be used once. With an expected lifetime of 10 years or 100 flights, it's really getting time for a next generation version. This week the challenge is to design that next generation space shuttle. Your shuttle for this challenge has to be as versatile as the original. The most important feature is that the mayor part of the spacecraft has to be reusable. Further it must be suitable for transporting astronauts and payload, such as satellites and parts for the ISS. Jump in and show us your next generation space shuttle.

Good luck ALL!

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

Lifeboat

A lifeboat is a small craft usually carried on ships to provide a means of emergency evacuation in the event of a disaster aboard the ship. Beside ships they can also be found at oilrigs and in helicopters or airplanes which could crash into the sea. Lifeboats can be divided into two main categories; lifeboats with a rigid hull or inflatable lifeboats (often called liferafts). For this challenge all lifeboats are allowed, including liferafts and rescueboats. Your model could be an existing boat or an imaginary design of your own. Typical properties of lifeboats are a low center-of-gravity point, a bright orange color and protection to the elements (sun, wind, water).

Good luck ALL!

3D Challenge #025 - Lawn mower

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

Lawn mower

This week we will do a bit of gardening by creating our very own lawn mower. The first lawn mower was invented by English engineer Edwin Beard Budding in 1827 as a superior alternative to the scythe. These lawn mowers where man powered until the 1930s, when Power Specialties Ltd. introduced a gasoline-powered rotary mower. Later the electric powered lawn mowers were introduced beside the gasoline powered mowers. For this challenge, all types of lawn mowers are allowed (reel mowers, rotary mowers, riding mowers, hover mowers, robotic mowers, professional mowers, etc.), including mowers of your own design.

Good luck ALL!

3D Challenge #024 - Floor lamp

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

Floor lamp

This week's challenge is an indispensable piece of furniture for every living-room, the floor lamp. It's main purpose is of course to illuminate a space, but it can do that in many different ways. The floor lamp can be used as an accent light, a reading light or to create a specific atmosphere in the room. These differences are determined by the used lights and the overall design of the lamp. The design also determines if it's just a functional piece of furniture or an object of art in the living-room. For this challenge, the only rule is that the lamp must be placed on the ground, as we are creating a floor lamp. With a rather small object this challenge, there's lots of time to spend on the small details of your lamp.

Good luck ALL!

3D Challenge #023 - Star Wars podracer

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

Star Wars podracer

If you've watched the movie Star Wars: episode I - The phantom menace, you might remember the part with the Boonta Eve Challenge on the planet Tatooine. This was a race of several laps with so called "podracers". These podracers usually consist of two huge turbine engines which drag a small capsule with the driver. The one who completes the laps the fastest wins the race. This week the challenge is to create your own podracer for the Boonta Eve Challenge. The overall design should consist of one capsule for the driver with two engines. Weapons are not allowed, as speed and raw power are the keywords for your design.

Water tower

For this week we have another building type challenge, the water tower. A water tower is nothing more than a building or a construction to keep a very large tank of water at a height sufficient enough to pressurize a water supply system. Althought these buildings still exist around the world, most of them are disconnected from the water supply system and replaced by pumps. These days they often fulfil different uses like an observation tower, houses, restaurants, telecommunication tower or other commercial use. Jump in and start creating your version of this monument of civil enginering.

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

Battlebot

You may know the TV-show with all those robots battleling in an arena against each other. This week we are going to model a battlebot for such a contest. There are two limitations to your battlebot; With all battle weapons fully extended the bot should fit in a box with a length, width and height of 8 foot or 2,5m. Secondly, in case of a multibot (a configuration consisting of multiple independent smaller bots) you may not have more than three independent bots which should fit together in the same box of 8 foot or 2,5m. More information about battlebots can be found at the official battlebot website.

This week's challenge:

Windmill

This week we are going to use the power of the wind by creating a windmill. Windmills exist all over the world in all kind of sizes, shapes and for many applications. During history, this force of nature has been used to pump water, grind grain, saw wood and to produce electricity in the modern windmill generations. As usual you are free to choose the design and application of your windmill. You can use one of the mentioned applications or create a new one yourself.

3D Challenge #019 - Magnetic levitation train

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

Magnetic levitation train

Magnetic levitation (maglev), a method by which an object is suspended with no support other than magnetic fields. This principle makes a train float in air which eliminates friction that wheels normally would produce. Without that friction, higher speeds are possible. The current speed record of a maglev train is 581 km/h or 361 mph. The challenge this week is to create such a maglev train from an existing or imaginary design.

Beside the weekly challenge, we would like you to take notice of an additional challenge by Aidan Chopra from the Sketchupdate blog. For that challenge you have to create a new sleigh for Santa. More information about the challenge and how to participate can be found at the Sketchupdate blog.

Note: Please read the guidelines for participating in the challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to have fun and bring SketchUp users together and help each other learn and get better at using our favorite 3d modeling program. We will remove comments that are objectionable or offensive.

This week's challenge:

One person spaceship

With very few examples available, the subject for this challenge demands a bit of imagination. We are going to model a spaceship for one person. There are no limitations to the ships purpose, size, shape, style or used technology for as long as it is designed for one person. It could be a one person fighter, an escape capsule or just a normal transportation vehicle for the future. All options are open, so let your imagination go crazy on this challenge. A nice example of a one person spaceship is the Tie Fighter from Darth Vader of the Star Wars movies, as shown in the image above.
